HSG in 2 hours.... NERVOUS!!

I have an HSG in 2 hours---nervous is an understatement!!

I'm not sure if I should be hoping everything is free and clear, or if I should almost be hopeful they find something that they can fix, and therefore we'd have an explanation for why I haven't gotten pregnant yet? Is it going to hurt like some people say? Will I have the results instantly? I just really have no clue what to expect.

Send positive thoughts to the midwest please!! :-)

Hello there!  I just had an HSG yesterday.  Here's my positives/negatives of the entire procedure:

    Positives:
    • Yes you will know the results instantly.  You will see the x-ray of your fallopian tubes on monitors during the procedure, and the doc will be able to tell you immediately if your tubes are open or not.
    • It's quick, especially if there are no problems.  Mine lasted a few minutes.
    • From what I understand you only have to go through this procedure once!
    • People report having luck getting pregnant just from this procedure alone.  My doctor told me this right before the procedure as well.

    Negative
    • Everyone's experience of pain seems to be different.  I had a lot of pain, but I really don't want that to scare you since so many people don't experience any pain at all and/or only mild discomfort.  If you do experience pain, however, just know this is pretty normal, at least compared to what I have read.
I guess there are more positives than negatives :)  Best of luck and please let us know how things go!

  • Sending positive thoughts your way ! I will say it was not half as bad as I thought . I was absolutely terrified and people I had known that had had it done had scared me . yes , it did hurt . But it was so quick it was bearable . I didn't experience any cramping afterwards . My doc said that on a pain scale of 1 to 10 (10 being child birth pain ) it's about a five or six . I would agree . To me it felt like really bad menstrual cramps but again for a very very brief time . Good luck !!! It's good to get answers either way !!!

  • I had the exact same thoughts and feelings going through my head and was SO nervous. Mine wasn't bad at all. I had very minor spotting after the procedure and no cramping afterwards. Everyone's experience is different. For me, it did feel like menstrual cramps. The cramping progressively became more intense, but as soon as it actually started being painful, it was over. Don't be nervous. You will get through this. Even if you are one of those to experience pain, it is a VERY quick procedure once the catheter is in! I feel you on not knowing which way you want the test results to be. Just know that whatever the result is, you will have a "next step" to getting pregnant. I wasn't able to see the xray during my procedure, but I was told my results immediately after, and I got a CD with my images that I stared at incessantly when I got home. Good luck!!

  • Thank you ladies!!

It wasn't *too* bad. I will admit was a bit painful.Thank goodness for the calm, sweet nurse who held my hand! The worst parts were when they were blowing up the balloon on the end of the catheter, and then again when they were injecting the dye.

I thought the pain was similar to that of bad gas or something. I also felt a lot of pressure and just a feeling of fullness. The doctor told me there were no limits afterward, so I went back to work after the appointment, and felt just fine the rest of the afternoon!

    Good news is no blockages!
