Is it normal? Does it get better?

My little one is 17 days old and I have a hard time figuring out when she is hungry and when she is done eating. Sometimes, it is pretty obvious - she sticks out her tongue, sticks her hand in her mouth and searches for my nipple, but other times she is just fussy and calms when I hold her or if I give her a pacifier. And usually, after an hour or so I feed her and then she goes to sleep. I just don't know if I should feed her sooner or not... I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. She is breastfed (with nipple shield) and eats every 2-3 hours. Sorry for the rambling. I'm really tired and overwhelmed.

Edit: to say with nipple shield - had written without before.

  • Totally normal and totally gets better! Sounds like you are following her cues well and doing everything right! Unless there is some sign she's not getting enough (not enough wet or poopy diapers) I would keep doing what you are doing.

Ps....glad to hear BFing without the shield is working for you!!

  • Thanks for your comment. I should have said with the shield. Hehe. She is napping, so I guess it is time for my nap too.
  • Totally normal, baby eats when they are hungry and it's super unpredictable for a while at the beginning! Just follow her cues and offer
