Gripe Water/Gas Drops

Baby's been quite fussy the past 24 hrs or so and it seems that it could be gas related. I've seen a lot of moms on here recommend gripe water and gas drops and I'm just wondering, what's the difference between the two and if there are specific brands that are better than others? Thanks!

  • I use gripe water if LO has severe
Hiccups or is very colicky. But I use them as a last resort. I also use the gas drops for LO bc he has has horrible gas, I also changed to the anti-colic bottles by tommee tippee as well, which has help a lot .
  • I also use gas drops and they seem to have helped some along with switching to a gentle formula.
  • I also recommend gas drops. Gripe water never did anything.

Gripe water has some ingredients (i.e. Ginger) that might help nausea, but for gas, Mylicon drops will be much more effective. Though for minor gas, you can try "bicycling" LO's legs.

@krysta6, I'm curious if/why your ped would say never to use gripe water; I think it's like the baby equivalent of drinking ginger ale when you're nauseous. It worked wonders when my DS was one and got s stomach ache from eating a whole cupcake at his 1st birthday party.

  • My pediatrician said always to try the least invasive method first, and she suggested the gripe water. Gas drops contain simethicone and gripe water contains sodium bicarbonate, fennel, and ginger. Mommy's bliss is what she recommended and it worked well for my little one. Good luck!
  • My ped also said no water until he's 1 year old. Said water even gripe water fills them up and had no nutritional value and makes them not hungry and also can cause water intoxication in babies as well apparently. So I've never given him water, only breast Milk but it sucks because I have to watch him as he hiccups and I feel bad for him.
  • @MamaOwl15 I think she is just appalled at the idea of basically giving soda water to babies (she's one of the hard ass peds in the practice). My friends use it for hiccups though but I thought I read it's recommended to wait until 4 weeks?

We have our 8 week appt with our fav pediatrician and I plan on asking her opinion.
  • I have the Little Remedies gas drops and they are a life saver. One of the nipples on DD's bottle ripped a little and I didn't notice (I thought she was just eating fast) and it was causing her to get gas bad, the drops worked super fast and settled her tummy so she and I could get some rest.
