Anyone else with a big age gap between your youngest & this baby?

My kids will be 11 and 9 when this little one debuts!  Anyone else?  Have you told the kids?

It sort of feels like starting anew - I have NO baby stuff.  Will you have a baby shower?

This is DP's first, so it's all new for him...And he's super nervous.

I guess I'm just wondering how it's going for others.

Re: Anyone else with a big age gap between your youngest & this baby?

  • My dd will be 17, step daughter will be 20 and step son will be 15 when this one arrives!! I am only 5 weeks today and have not told anyone except DH! We will wait until my u/s at the 8 week appointment. I guess we will have a shower since we obviously have nothing. I'm pretty nervous to tell the kids! We are already grand parents! Step daughter has a little girl. So I'm not sure how everyone is going to feel.

  • I am a first time mom, but there is a huge gap between my sister and I 8 1/2 years apart. I was a "whoopsie baby", however she always wanted a little sister so it worked out well. We grew up not super close, I was always so much younger then her and whatever she was going through I didn't understand. Getting older into our 20s we became best friends couldn't live without each other
  • This is my first so no input on that front.

However I am the youngest and my 2 half brothers are 7 and 9 years older than me. I wouldn't change it, I love the relationships we have, especially now that we are all adults.

  • My kids will be 12 and almost 9 when this one arrives. I don't have any baby stuff and feel strange about having a shower, although I'm sure my mom will likely organize one. My 8 year old is super excited. My 11 year old cried for two hours when she heard the news, but she's coming around.
  • . I don't have any baby stuff and feel strange about having a shower,
I feel strange too, although I have a lot of friends in my new town who didn't know me when I was pregnant before.  They're pretty much all done baby-making, and have been dying for me & DP to get hitched & pregnant...
  • My step kids will be 11 and 9 too!
  • I thought we had a big age gap until I read this thread! Our two are 21 months apart (7 and almost 6 now), so there will be a 6.5 year gap between my youngest and baby.
  • My step daughter will be 9 , step son 6 and my daughter is 6 when baby arrives. They all really want a baby to add to the group so I see it as they are old enough to be helpers!

Haven't told them yet until first doc appointment at 8 weeks.
  • My daughters will be 16 & 18 when this baby makes his or her debut.
  • Im a FTM, but my closest sibling is 17 years older than me. I'm 23 now and most of my siblings are in their 40s or 50s. Big gap! It has it's pros and cons. I grew up in my house like an only child and my siblings and I didn't have those petty sibling fights... Except for on a few road trips where I wanted to listen to Barney and my Brother wanted Vanilla Ice lol
  • I thought I had a gap, but it's not a big as some of you ladies. My youngest will be four and a half when this LO makes its appearance. We did think we were done and get rid of all of our baby stuff though so we're definitely starting over there.
  • My youngest sister is 8 years younger than me and we've always been super close. I fought all the time with the middle sister (2 years younger than me) but never the youngest. I also loved helping out with her when she was little
  • my kids will be 9, 5 and 22 months when this little one arrives. so there will be a 9 year age gap between my oldest and youngest.

  • Yes! 3boys, 20 , 16 and 14! And a SS that is 10. Makes me feel old!!!!!! My oldest will b 21 when this LO is born
  • My last baby was born when my older two kids were 11 and 8.  Now, I have a 14, 11 and almost 3 year old.  We've already told the kids and they are very excited.  It was definitely like starting over, having a newborn when my older two kids were so independent and self-sufficient.  I didn't have to buy a bunch of stuff though because I'm pretty minimalist when it comes to babies.  I bought a stash of cloth diapers and some sleepers and onesies and a new carseat.  I still had a box of stuff in my garage that I had saved from when my kids were little so I was able to use them as well.  I didn't have a shower.

  • My son will be 5 1/2 years old when babe is born. We've told him already and he's over the moon excited. My stomach gets several kisses a day, even right before he hops on the school bus!
  • My kiddos are just turning 6 and 8, and that feels like a pretty big gap to me, since my first two are 22 months apart!
We included them in conversations about our plans to have a sibling for them (my partner and I are having her 1st child, and she has taken on step-mom role to my first two) they asked me every day if I was pregnant yet until we got our BFP!
  • My stepson is 7, so there will be a big age gap when I have my first baby.

I have four siblings (with a 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 year gap between each) and the way I interact with them definitely varies by age difference. I have always been extremely close to my 18 mo. younger sister and would've gone on a trip with her this weekend if I hadn't been put under house arrest by my doctor. My youngest sibling is 8 years younger, and while we bond together on a geeky level, I have a tendency to parent her.

  • This baby is my first as well but I was 7 when my brother was born and 9 when my sister was born. I loved it because I remember when they were born and I was actually the first one to hold my sister so that's something really special to me :) We are really close and they were young when DH and I got together so even he has gotten to see them grow up which is neat. My mom loved it too because I was such a good helper with them. They are 14 and almost 16 now so they will be young when our baby comes but I know they're going to love it!! Congratulations and good luck!!
  • My daughter will be almost 8 by the time this baby is born. We were not planning on having another baby... we did 3 years of infertility treatment but decided to give up. Well, God has a funny way of answering prayers! I'm really nervous some people will think we are crazy for having another baby with such an age gap, but at the same time I really believe our daughter will be anxious to 'help' and that could definitely be beneficial!
  • I have a 14 year old and a 2 year old, so I know how you feel.

  • My youngest will be almost 8 when baby number 4 gets here. We have nothing left from the older three. Nervous about starting over since the kids are so independent now.
  • I will have an 18yo, a 13 yo, and a 7yo upon babies arrival.... it's true a lot less arguments with them...
  • Hi my son's will be 15 and 13 when baby is born. Both the kids are really excited. I've just got to figure out how to help with gcses, football, rugby ect with a new born in tow lol. Let the fun begin x
  • There will be a 7 year gap between our oldest and this LO.  DD-- Does have 2 other siblings on her Dad's side so she is already a big sister, hopefully this one will be a boy so it will be her first brother :)

  • I'm a FTM but my own mother had HUGE age gaps with her siblings.  Her half brother is 17 years older than her, her other brother is 9 years older.  Growing up my cousins were closer to aunts and uncles for me because they were basically adults when I was born
