Mastitis

Yesterday I woke up feeling as if I had the flu and my right breast hurting. When I called the doctor with my symptoms he told me I had mastitis. I am 10 days postpartum and am already dealing with a 3rd degree laceration. I'm falling apart!!

I'm a FTM and was hoping to get some advice on how to overcome mastitis and not get it again.

I've been there before. So sorry you are dealing with it. To help get rid of mastitis definitely take the antibiotics as prescribed. Nurse baby as often as you can or pump that breast frequently. If you can position baby so the bottom lip is in direct line of where it hurts that should help drain the breast. Use warm compresses and take warm showers then try to gently massage the affected breast. I know it hurts :( Do not stop any leaks on that side. Also when you have a 'let down" try to let it drip naturally into a blanket or burp cloth, don't stop it.

  • So I haven't had mastitis, but I've had plugged ducts and they hurt so bad. Massaging the area and pushing towards the nipple helps a lot (it hurts but you just need to push through it), and I've found that getting in the shower and letting hot water flow over while you massage feels so good and relieves it almost immediately. I hope it clears up soon! I can't imagine having an infection on top of a plugged duct. Make sure you nurse/pump lots! Don't go too long too often not pumping or nursing.
  • Definitely make sure you go in to see the doctor. A friend of mind had this turn into an abscess and had to have it lanced yesterday. Not trying to scare you, but just wanted you to be aware of what could happen.
  • Thank you for the advice! Is it bad that I almost would rather exclusively pump than to keep breastfeeding and potentially get mastitis again?
  • I got mastitis when my son was an infant. It sucks! Make sure to keep the milk flowing. To avoid getting it again, you don't have to EP instead of directly BF, but make sure your boobs aren't getting overly full. Take the antibiotics as prescribed and nurse as often as baby wants.

  • No it's not bad you want to do something you feel more comfortable with after going through this. It is a personal choice for you and you alone to make! Sorry for your pain and difficulties! Do what is right for you! Just know that everything comes with its own challenges! Good luck
