High-Risk Pregnancy

Detached Placenta

Hi! I'm currently 17 weeks and have been having problems since 11 weeks. During my 11th week, I went to the ER because I noticed some bleeding. We had an ultrasound done and the baby was perfectly fine. They did tell me that I had a small subchorionic hemorrhage but that it was small so it shouldn't be a problem.

When I went in the following week to my OB they did notice the hemorrhage but only repeated what the hospital had said. But what they did comment on, was the lack of amniotic fluid. I was scheduled to come back the following week and there was no change in the fluid levels. They sent me to a fetal diagnostic center to be seen by a specialist. The doctors there were anything but lenient. They had crushed our hopes of carrying our little baby in our arms. After blood tests, they dismissed us and told us to be seen at my OB THE following week. After that appointment we moved back home to Louisiana from Hawaii.

My first visit back home was routine. Heartbeat was strong but as everyone is, they were concerned about blood loss. I was sent to another fetal diagnostic center the next day and they did give me some answers. The hemorrhage cause the placenta to detach and that was causing the bleeding and the lack of fluid. The outcomes they gave were grim and I'm just looking for hope. Out of the 5 doctors I've seen, none have given me treatment options or bed rest or any sort of direction. The only thing that has been consistent is the fact that they've all told me to expect to come in one day and not hear a heart beat. Can anyone give me some encouragement?! I go in tomorrow to see my home OB and she is familiar with me and my family's history. I will try to update as I hear news! Fingers crossed and prayers would be welcomed! :)

Re: Detached Placenta

  • I am so sorry that you are going through all this. No experience with placenta abruption or low amniotic fluid levels. I have a friend IRL that was advised to abort at 20w d/t a life threatening genetic defect with baby. She refused and found out 2 or 3 weeks later that baby is perfectly healthy. The Drs are not always right, hoping that additional testing will find out that your situation is not as bad as they make it seem. Will pray for you and your baby. I would be looking into where is the nearest level 3 NICU, my NICU will try to save any baby at > 20 weeks gestation. Real risk of no long term neurological deficits begins at 28w. Hope they can find a way to safely keep your baby cooking until it is safe to deliver.

  • How did everything turn out for you? I saw a fetal maternal specialist at the fetal diagnostic center yesterday and was told the exact same thing happened to me. While reading your story I felt like I was reading my own story. I would love to know how it turned out. They told me there's a little hope, but not a ton. They are also very concerned about infection.
  • Were the doctors at any of these places perinatologists or high risk specialists? I had a subchronic hematoma through my first and second trimester. I'm in Texas, not crazy far from you. If you'd be interested I could give you a couple of people to call, may be they could talk to you or review your chart before making you drive in? I have a huge hematoma from delivery now, the infectious disease specialist I see is amazing! If I get pregnant again, then I plan on using him as my OB.
  • P.S. I would definitely put myself on pelvic rest, that's what I was put on for my subchronic hematoma, and be sure to stay hydrated for both the hematoma and amniotic fluid.
  • The OP posted this back in May and hasn't logged back in since May 26th.
