Needing to take Ambien and getting nervous about it :(

I wrote a post on this before. However, I have been getting more and more nervous about taking it.
I have sever insomnia while pregnant and took Ambien with my daughter ( who is perfectly normal) However, I am starting to fear it during this pregnancy. Is anyone else in the same boat? Any past experiences?

Re: Needing to take Ambien and getting nervous about it :(

  • No experience with taking Ambien at all really, other than to fantasize about it, along with a litany of other things I want to be able to do to get a good night's rest. I'm a lifelong insomniac and already have one child who is not a great sleeper-you think I would be used to sleepless nights, right? Good luck!

  • Have you tried something milder yet? I took Tylenol pm, Benadryl or unisom at the suggestion of my doctor last pregnancy. I haven't had to yet this time. I don't usually have sleeping issues (not pregnant) but these have all worked for me, and they are on the approved list of meds from my doctor.
  • I never have sleeping issues when not pregnant. However, I definitely do when pregnant. I started of with Tylenol Pm, Benadryl and Unisom. At first they worked but them stopped :(
I also have changed eating habits and activity to no avail :) That's is why my OB gave me Ambien but told me to try not to use it all the time because of side effects to ( dependance, sleep walking). I am now getting worried for me and the little one. Last pregnancy I started taking into around 32 weeks.
  • I took it all of my first pregnancy and all of this one as well. I have severe insomnia and take it every single night....and have for years. It's more to help slow my brain down bc it does not knock me out...that's when you know you have bad insomnia.

I have my husband take the bottle so I don't get an extra one during a sleep walking episode. They don't happen often, but I always feel better having him have the meds and me not know where they are.

My OB always tells patients that it is better to get sleep now bc you will be sleep deprived later (as you know). They even gave it to me during labor hoping it would calm me down. Needless to say, they were annoyed that it didn't do much. But, take it if/when you feel okay with it! Good luck on the sleep :)
  • Thank you Kfreeman2008. I started to feel very alone in this journey with my insomnia :(
  • I've taken ambien most of my pregnancy (27 wks) and for 10-12 years prior. I swear I've had insomnia since the day I was born. I went cold turkey around 20 weeks and stayed off it for almost a month. I honestly felt much better during the day for those weeks (after the initial 2-3 days). I would just say be careful if you take it every night bc it might be making you feel crappier during the day without realizing it. And watch with sleep walking... for me sleep eating. I've gotten up in the morning and walked into my kitchen to find remnants of all the things I ate in the middle of the night.

I ended up going back on it about a month ago because of super fun pregnancy induced carpal tunnel that caused me to wake up in horrible pain in both arms. Carpal tunnel still stinks but at least with the ambien I don't remember how mad I was that I couldn't sleep.

Just remember as with everything during pregnancy you have to weigh benefits vs risk. I don't know about you but me being pregnant and tired is a risky situation for anyone in my vicinity.
