Spinal Canal Ultrasound

At LOs first check up, our pediatrician noted a malformation if the skin on his tailbone. Today we are headed to the hospital for a spinal canal ultrasound. I hope it'll just confirm his buttcrack is just crooked-cute, but there's a slim chance it's more than that.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Have you had any development issues with your LO? Were they scares? Or real concerns?

Re: Spinal Canal Ultrasound

  • DD#1 was born with a sacral dimple (or asymmetrical buttcrack) which turned out to be an indicator of tethered cord, a condition where the spinal cord gets stuck on something and does not rise up into the spine as it should. Left untreated, it can cause the cord to stretch and do all sorts of neurological damage. Fortunately, it was caught early, and she had surgery to release the cord when she was 3 months old. She's completely fine, very active and agile, and a natural climber. No one even knows she had the surgery as we didn't tell many people. My niece was born with the same condition and is also fine (she makes bigger messes than my toddler, who is older by 1.5 years!). It scared the hell out of DH and I when we first heard the diagnosis, but everything turned out fine. Fingers crossed for you and your LO.

  • I had to take DS#1 in for an ultra sound for the same reason and everything turned out to be fine just a "butt dimple"  hopefully yours turns out the same good luck :)
  • Thank you both! The ultrasound tech said there wasn't anything to be concerned wuth, but we will get official results Monday.
