Anembryonic pregnancy?

Hi everyone, so I had my first vaginal ultrasound a few days ago, I am supposed to be 6weeks and 3 days pg (6+1 at the time of the ultrasound) but turns out the doc couldn't see anything in the sac then she said something about a blighted ovum, do you think it may be too early to decide? My HCG keeps going up (5,380 this Wednesday) but I'm still driving myself nuts with worry, this is my first and very much wanted pg (one other lost at a very very early stage) but really want to hope...

Re: Anembryonic pregnancy?

  • I was faced with the same issue at 5.5 weeks. Going for my ultrasound again this Am hoping for a change st 6.5. they told me they were "cautiously optimistic". 'I'm not a doctor, but from my own education on this, if it happened to me I was waiting 8-9 weeks to make a decision. As long as my HCG was bumping appropriately and I had no MC signs. I would listen to your doctor and do your own research, then make a decision what is best for you. My HCG was 22000 at 6 weeks so hoping things have progressed. Everyone is different!

  • Hi @Lu+Lu, I'm really sorry about your appointment and the outcome. By 5 weeks there would be something in the sac and it would have a clear definition. (Posted my us 5+6 for comparison). Unfortunately, with blighted ovum pregnancies, the gestational sac can still produce increasing HCG for a while even though the embryo isn't developing normally. I was very afraid that despite my high bhcg bw, I would find a BO when I went in for my scan yesterday. It's unfortunately not uncommon. :( I am sure your Drs will continue to monitor you. Please keep us updated and again, so sorry. Hugs.

Thanks for your reply @aloha5735 , we have a second appointment next week and hope things will be decided then, at the same time I feel it may be too early to throw in the towel, I read a lot how sometimes they can hide for a few weeks... The wait is torturous tho and the sadness incredibly heavy :-( I will keep my fingers crossed for you, let me know how it went, I really hope everything turns out well for you! I've also read that at 5 weeks it's often too early to see much, I have high hopes for you! X

Thank you for your support, I do have hope but I'm not fooling myself, these things happen and tho I am willing to accept the worst it's even harder after loosing another one last month, 10 years of marriage and a diagnosis of perimenopause at only 33, making this a likely last shot :'(
  • at 5 we saw a sac. he wasn't happy. next week sac was more defined w a yolk. week after a heartbeat :) when I was at 7w3d I measured a week behind. I'm now 9 and still pregnant! good luck!!
  • Nothing to add but just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you. Keep is informed!

Do you know for sure when you ovulated? Late o or late implantation could both mean you aren't as far along and could definitely change the look of the scan or like pp said could be a late bloomer. I hope and pray this works or at least isn't your last shot! Have you tried the IF board yet? We are a pretty great group and most of us have similar outlook or previous loss. They'd all be happy to root you through the next week until your fu scan too. GL and FX!
  • Hoping and praying for the best!  Hopefully you are just measuring a little early, or you ovulated early.

Thank you @klauerinaking @hockeyfan42 and @NicknShan very kind of you to offer hope!

@HBamama2B is IF the same as IVF? I had a quick scan of one but as I'm not getting the treatment I figured I didn't "fit". But I do know that women going through it can be amazingly supportive, I have so much respect for them as I have done Chlomifen and Brevactid before but couldn't do more than one cycle as it made me horribly sick :-( the doctor said that it's possible she counted 3 days too early and therefore we may -cautiously- be a week behind but we will find out more next week.
What week are you on (I assume you are pg too)?
  • @lu+lu 5w5d I saw a yolk and a sac.  My sac is irregular.  I went today 6w4d i'm a day ahead and we have a little heart.  Still irregular.  Put an email to my doctor to see what that was about.  I think 5 weeks is just to early to count yourself out, they told me that I may just see a gestation sac and that was it @ 5 weeks.  I asked them what should I see so when I saw nothing I didn't freak myself out.  Maybe you are earlier than you think?
  • At 6&3 we saw only a sac, 36w4d now with a healthy baby girl. Try to keep your head up while acknowledging it could go either way. Thoughts to you!!

@aloha5736 yay for the little heart! Can I ask why is it irregular still?
I may or may not be early, the doctor sounded at the end of our visit like she was trying to backtrack from her earlier comments of how there should be "something bigger" there, hubby is also a doctor and he says she shouldn't have said that, that it was insensitive and she should have waited another few weeks to make sure but the damage was done and I cried for 2 days straight. On the one hand I want to hope and know that in medicine (and at this early stage) nothing is 100% certain, on the other hand, the doctor's experience leaves me wondering... :-(

@ewhitledge oh you give me so much hope, thank you!
  • Don't give up hope. It seems early to be saying for sure. FX for you and your baby.

  • Unless you had an ultrasound or were temping to confirm ovulation there's is no way to know if your dates are correct. Good luck and fx you ovulated late than you thought.
  • @Lu+Lu good luck!! it's so scary but I stayed positive!!
  • @Lu+Lu it's not perfectly round it's more it's a weird shape. Not even oval. Oh we'll see what happens lol. I agree with your husband she was insensitive. To early to tell anything IMO.
  • I was 5 + 3 last Friday and not only did they not see a baby, they didn't even see a sac! They saw absolutely nothing but a thickened endometrium. I was bleeding wed so I went in and sure as shit there was a baby measuring perfectly with a heartbeat. That was as 6 + 1. The difference a few days makes at this point is insane
  • I wouldn't freak out yet. American doctors jump the gun WAY too often. In Europe they made it a rule that you can't diagnose blighted ovum until 9 weeks. Some just take longer than others, everyone is different and everyone's pregnancy is different.
I'm the last person to blow smoke up anyone's ___ so I'm quite honest when I say try not to worry yet. Give it a few more weeks.
  • @emucoleman I think so too, thanks!
@cattlebride that's just the thing, we go to a fertility clinic and have 2 doctors there, we temped, they did ultrasounds and blood tests to check for eggs and time of ovulation so they should be pretty certain of what they are saying yet I still think it's too early...
@mrszoess , yes it is, I am trying to!
    @aloha5736 xx
@alysemciver wow, so glad yours was ok, and yes, I keep hearing that at the beginning a day makes a difference. Hope the bleeding stopped and you're ok now! X
@longhurrdontcurr I get what you say about American doctors, I think they may be under a lot more pressure because of how common lawsuits are etc...? But it's funny cause I live in Germany so I would have expected the doctor to be more sensitive about this. Oh well, I've kind of given up on worrying, can't do anything about it now just wait for Monday... Thank you everyone for your input, you do give me hope and you're so amazingly supportive, thank you for that! Xx

Oh how interesting!! You're in Germany? I thought they were supposed to wait till 9 weeks now before assigning that sort of diagnosis? I'll have to try to find the articles discussing that....
    Fx for you Monday!
  • @longhurrdontcurr Not sure about the waiting, should look it up...
    Thanks for your thoughts x
  • @Lu+Lu yes, I'm 6+2. I'm not sure how the acronyms are used in Germany but here IF stands for infertility and IVF is a medical treatment for infertility that involves medications, surgical egg retrieval, conception outside the uterus and then reimplantation of an embryo or embryos into the uterus. Good luck tomorrow! Hope that LO grew a ton and is rocking along healthy and strong.
  • @HBamama2B we are in the same week (-1/2days) yay!! I see now what you meant, I think IF and IVF are the same here too, but now that my heart is lighter I hope I won't have to visit that page anytime soon. I hope your little one is also doing well and growing as it should Xx

Oh my word, there was a gorgeous little fetus!!! I made an appt with another doctor for today and we got to see our little one, peacefully developing like it should (and yes we were several days later than the first doc said). I cannot begin to express my happiness and I'm so thankful for how lovely and supportive you all were. I don't know what lies ahead but at least now I know that it was NOT a blighted ovum, I leave this thread now with a peaceful and grateful heart and a big hug to you lovely mummies who were so kind to offer support! Xx

    So very happy for you!!!!!

    :x
  • That is wonderful news!!!
