Trying to resist cravings

I didn't search, but I didn't really see anything that answers my question.

So I had an appointment today and got my final ultra sound! Everything is good and baby looks healthy. He is on the bigger side (about 4 pounds, which I know can be wrong). I just barely passed my One hour glucose test. They didn't say anything about retesting me, but he said because baby is big, I should watch my sugar.

So here's my question. Does anyone have tips on not giving into cravings. Seriously all I want to eat is chocolate. I hate making dinner, although I have been and making it pretty healthy. When my husband is at work, i tend to go pretty crazy! I over indulge and I always feel bad about it. Now I'm really worried about hurting my baby because I'm being stupid and selfish! Other then not buying bad things, which is step number one, any other tips I can follow?

Sorry if this is long, but I'm hormonal and upset right now!

Re: Trying to resist cravings

  • I know how weird this sounds but when I'm feeling like I need to eat healthier I pinterest healthy recipes and eventually end up craving something healthy. Lol good luck!! As long as you're not eating chocolate and dessert for every meal I think you'll be fine!

  • Pintrest! They have a lot really yummy (healthy) stuff. That's what I've been leaning on this pregnancy too.
  • These are good! I was panicking a little when I wrote this! I also thought maybe when I want something junky and I'm not even hungry, i could go for a small walk! Get my endorphins going and maybe it will help!
  • I try to pair something healthy with the not healthy thing. Like last night I wanted cheese popcorn, so I ate a yogurt before it so I didn't completely stuff my face with popcorn. The day before I wanted cookies, so I had some carrots before. It helps!
^^ This totally works for me too.  I try not to completely eliminate the sweet cravings because I find that I binge on something sweet eventually if I do so.  So when I get them, eat a healthy snack or meal and if I am still hungry will fit in that cookie or candy.

  • @stephaniearthurs I'm there with you.. I passed my one hour glucose test with no problem, but sometimes all I want is sweets and I worry what it could be doing to my LO. It definitely takes self control and I haven't had much lately :| thanks for posting this!

I love that you ladies look up healthy recipes on Pinterest. I find myself pinning desserts lol
  • Maybe you can find a healthy version of your cravings. When I was craving chocolate chip cookies I made dark chocolate chip granola bars to eat instead. It wasn't exactly what I wanted but was enough to take the edge off and may it easier. Plus I was getting some nutrients from the bars rather than just empty calories.

I've also gotten small packs of fun size stuff and ration it out for a week. Then I refuse to buy more if I run out sooner. For a while it was snack sized snickers. I ate one each day and it satisfied something and helped me from over indulging. Also, I knew if I binges on them they'd be gone and I'd be sad and suffering the rest of the week for that one moment of weakness.
  • I actually find that not being too strict helps a lot. If I want something unhealthy, I have a small portion. Then I am usually all set and don't want it anymore. If I try really hard to avoid something, I usually end up overdoing it the next time I have some because I wouldn't let myself have it when I first wanted it.
That being said I never go out of my way to get anything because I want it, I just let myself have a little if it happens to be an option.
  • Feeling guilty about it can make it worse. Let yourself have some rather than excluding everything. I also have to tell myself when I do have sweets that I can always have more tomorrow. I agree with PPs about having something healthy first. This will help your appetite and hopefully mean you can try to eat less. Also, I find that when I'm exercising I also want to eat better - even if it's just a short walk. I do a lot of workout videos from YouTube in my living room.
  • Thank you ladies!!! I really do appreciate all your help! I think some of it is being stuck at home and bored!! I should try and do something more productive during the day!!
  • If you're like me and don't give in to your cravings, it just makes you want it 100x more. So i'd say just have a small portion, and fulfill that urge. Tips from a GD'er who is watching diet: eat protein! Or if you're going to have carbs, pair with protein. This helps fill you up and get the vitamins you need, then you wont OVERindulge.
