Carbonara sauce made with raw egg? Helppp

So I've just had pasta carbonara made by my work and after I was finished eating it suddenly dawned on me that they could have used raw egg! Checked with them and they did use raw egg in the sauce but state that the egg would have cooked in the sauce before I ate it? I am freaking out, is this ok? Or totally not okay? X_X

Re: Carbonara sauce made with raw egg? Helppp

  • I always think about what my mom says when I panic about things - "I haven't died yet". The risk of salmonella is incredibly low and yes the sauce is cooked probably to a boil so there should be nothing to worry about.

People eat raw eggs, undercooked meat, lunch meat etc all of the time! Plus if the sauce is warmed up with the egg I'm sure you're even more likely to be fine. If you're seriously concerned I would call your doctor

    This ^^

  • I eat raw cookie dough and deli food all the time. I'm fine, my baby is excelling. I'm much happier with my cookie dough too.
Sometimes I think people make this up just to ruin our fun.

(Obviously I know there's scientific studies and stuff but still, in moderation it's fine.)
  • I have runny eggs for breakfast all the time. I ate them during my last pregnancy and I am eating them during this pregnancy. You will be fine. Also, it is true that raw eggs go in to carbonara, but it does cook as it gets tossed with hot pasta.

  • Well, you've already eaten it. You'll either get sick from it or not, most likely not. If you do get sick you should tell your doctor about the raw egg just to be safe. But freaking out at this point isn't going to help anything. The risk from raw egg is salmonella, and the problem is that it will make you sick if you get it. It's not a sneaky thing that will hurt your baby without you knowing anything is going on.

Deep breath. Most likely everything will be fine. If, on the tiny chance you do get sick, then you know exactly what to tell your health care provider to get the care you need.

  • Mmmmm..... Carbonara. As PP said raw eggs just carry a low risk of salmonella, not even listeria which is also super rare but a bit more dangerous to the fetus if you get it. If you were to get sick you'd just have to tell your doctor so she can monitor you and replace all your fluids by drinking s lot of water. Wouldn't be fun but it's such a low possibility and manageable if you get it.
  • You'll be just fine. The pasta cooks the egg. Also, like others said, lots of us eat runny eggs during pregnancy.

The risk with most pregnancy "restrictions" is food poisoning (with the exception of the more serious listeria, which is behind the heat your lunch meat/hotdogs to steaming and no unpasteurized soft cheeses rule). If you didn't have concerns about food poisoning eating a certain food or from a certain place before, then you shouldn't now.

  • You're more likely to get sick from your salad or ice cream than a raw egg... Just think of it as a rare indulgence, and if you're still concerned about it, avoid from now on.

  • I had some on Sunday! Super yummy :) if the eggs hadn't cooked properly, I think you would have known. It probably would have been slimy. Even if the eggs were slightly underdone I wouldn't worry. Wouldn't be the first time I had runny eggs this pregnancy.

  • I think since the eggs were cooked in the sauce, you're completely fine.
IMO, if you eat mayo on anything, there's the same possibility. Mayo contains raw eggs. I can't live without mayo and I'm not about to start because I'm pregnant. It didn't kill me before being pregnant, not gonna kill me now.

I apologize if that sounds snappy. I'm not meaning it to. Just saying, if it didn't kill you before, I doubt it will now.
  • I eat over easy eggs all the time that are laid by my chickens and obviously aren't pasturized. No issues.
  • Just like everyone else said, don't worry! I eat runny eggs from time to time and there is no amount of discipline that could make me stop licking the bowl when I bake. Eggs have a pretty low risk these days since they're so pasteurized. Most of the bacteria is on the shell, which can fairly easily be avoided if you're *really* paranoid.

This may just be a pregnancy brain thing, but salad..? How salad..?

There's a risk of listeria with unwashed or inadequately washed veggies.

I got food poisoning at 37 weeks during my last pregnancy from a salad from a reputable restaurant. It was horrible. Can't believe I avoided sushi for 9 months only to end up getting sick from a salad!

  • I have eaten deli meat, raw cookie dough, raw sushi, and runny eggs with all three pregnancies. Yum!
