Possible breech at 38 weeks

Hi ladies,

I know we've had quite a few breech discussions but I wasn't able to find one that fit my situation. I'll be 38 weeks Thursday. Just had my weekly Dr appt this morning and the doctor could not determine where the baby's head was. She scheduled me for an ultrasound for this afternoon to be sure of where she is situated. I'm curious if any of you ladies have had any luck or know of anyone that had any luck getting the baby to turn from 38 weeks or beyond? I've been on spinning babies and have learned some positions from the birthing class to try to turn baby but is 38 weeks too far along to get the baby to turn? Any experience with this is welcome (:

Re: Possible breech at 38 weeks

  • I am 37 weeks now and confirmed last week that my little one is breech still, had an appt and ultrasound with ob to try a manual version and ended up bailing due to finding out that he has a nuchal cord (it's wrapped around his neck once) so that is probably why he didn't go head down. We have a c section in two weeks , just waiting to hear the final date for it.
    Good luck!!!

  • Have you discussed attempting a version?  My LO was confirmed breech at my 38w appointment on Monday, and we have a version scheduled for Friday.  I signed cs consent forms at my appointment just in case things don't go smoothly on Friday (there is a slight risk that the procedure could trigger labor or fetal distress, in which case we would do an emergency cs).
  • Well I'm only 35w, but my kiddo has been breech or transverse for at least the last 2 months.  I can feel her head under my left rib, it never moves from that spot!  My doc said we'll give her till my 36w appointment next Tuesday, then we'll talk version and/or C-section.
  • I am almost 37 weeks and baby girl is still breech. We discussed options and we decided that a scheduled c section was right for our family. My dr says she could still flip but not to hold our breaths. I know people have told me many stories of breech babies flipping the day before delivery so it isn't out of the question in my opinion.
  • Thank you all for sharing your experiences! I had my ultrasound and it turns out, baby girl is exactly where she needs to be; head down, face up, and low. The doctor just couldn't distinguish her head from her butt.  Here's to hoping she doesn't decide to change last second!
  • My LO had been breech for the last few months also, on Tuesday Dr confirmed that she had turned at 37 weeks 3 days. I would recommend to walk a lot (if you're able to), I walked more than normal all three days before my appointment and the night before she was so active in there I'm guessing that's when she was turning.
  • My LO was breech as of last week and he hangs out rather high. For those of you that had a breechy brat flip, could you immediately tell a difference? Or did you not know until your OB told you? I guess I've just convinced myself that if he flips he'd automatically engage like he's supposed to and that I would just know.
  • Just had another check and she is still breech and she has dropped so her butt is now engaged is my understanding. Dr told me that pretty much seals the deal as far as her being able to flip. Anybody have a baby that flipped after dropping?
  • Just had my 36 week appt. and my doctor couldn't tell if he was head down or not and said possible breech as well. I go in for an ultrasound today to see where he is at. Crossing fingers he is head down because it will be a mess if we have to do a c section. I will refuse to get one done at this hospital in our small town so the nearest best hospital is about an hour and 15 mins away. I had a bad experience with my last baby at this hospital with the placenta not coming out and having surgery.

DD flipped and it was obvious. It hurt but you could also make out that she was turning around... This happened the night before my scan! I had more pressure downwards as opposed to the high breech feeling. But she didn't engage, not until I was in labour!

Crossing my fingers for you as well! I hope everything works out for you!!

I could tell with the extra activity going on in there. Also when I laid down baby was noticeable on my left side then after she turned I could feel her on my right side, completely opposite of where she had been previously for weeks and I started to feel little jabs in new areas. So in my case I was able to notice.

On the spinningbabies website it has techniques to show how you could possibly get baby to move. Kind of like the downward dog, but with your knees on a chair or couch (and someone to assist lol). I don't know if it is any help but doing that once a day may make a difference? Good luck!
  • @crysgx thanks! I have been doing spinning babies with DH help but still nothing my Dad even recorded a message giving bribes and detailed directions to get her to move but so far nothing lol. Today's appointment was a bit discouraging like there is no hope of avoiding the c section.
  • Well baby ended up being breech but now I don't have an appt until Monday so we will see if they call me tomorrow with any news. They checked other stuff so I don't know everything about the ultrasound except where baby was located. I'm so impatient I hope they call me so we can move on to the next step in this process since this has never happened during previous pregnancies.

  • I found out yesterday that little gal flipped from head Down to breech.

Downward dog for a week then an ultrasound and if that doesn't work then we will try a version

Heading in for our version shortly...  Wish us luck!  Fingers crossed that it goes smoothly and she flips (and stays that way)!

    Good luck !!

Similar thing happened to me at my 36 week appointment on Tuesday. The doc thought her butt was her head, and didn't feel her head during the cervical check. Turns out she is head down but "floating" and not engaged in the pelvis at all.

It seems like that's what is going on with me as well. Hopefully she engages down there soon! Good luck to you as well!

Thanks! My doula has recommended squats, pelvic tilts, those weird upside down inversion things and walking. Now if I could just get enough energy to do them ... haha!
  • I was breeched before 34 weeks, my Midwive suggested seeing a chiropractor to get him to turn the baby, apparently lots of women had done this. Thankfully the baby turned itself by 36th week. I heard that when the baby gets too big it will be harder to turn. I also heard that swimming might help too. Good luck!!
  • You can also try acupuncture to have the baby turned, they have quite a good success rate and less intrusive than the inversion. Another option, a bit extreme but doing handstands in the pool has also brought on baby to turn even in the later weeks!! Both worth a try before going the c-section route. Good luck!
