I don't know what to do...

So I came in to the hospital last night to be induced at 41 weeks and 4 days. This was not my birth plan, but my midwifes office will not let me go past 42 weeks. Started last night on Cytotec. Did two rounds with no changes. Started pitocin this morning around 9am. It's almost 3pm and I'm 50% effaced and dilated a centimeter. The pitocin is at an 8 and they will not go beyond a 10. The OB that my midwife works with requested a growth scan last night and they estimated the baby at 9lb 8oz. She came in this afternoon and discussed the possibility of shoulder dystocia due to his size and the risk of palsy in his hands if his shoulder cannot get out. She does not feel confident that I can deliver my son vaginally due to his large size and my small frame and has already discussed a c section. I feel like that is what she wants me to do.. But is she pushing me in that direction because it is more convenient for her, or because it is really what is best for my baby.

Re: I don't know what to do...

  • It sounds like it's due to the size of your baby. I did a similar round of meds for my induction and I progressed faster so it may be beneficial for the c section because of your lack of progression as well. Obviously it's up to you but having gone through this I just wanted to offer another perspective. Good luck whatever you decide!! :-)

While you are really the only who can make that decision let me just say this.

My mom delivered 8 and 9 pound babies with no drugs at 5'2" and 100lbs.

A friend of mine was just told her baby was going to be over 10lbs and did the c-section. Baby was under 9lbs.

Best wishes for you as you make a difficult decision. ♡
  • What does your midwife say? I tey to always assume (naive I'm sure) that doctors are recommending what is in my best interest medically.

Good luck with whatever you decide and hope you are meeting your baby soon!!

  • I would trust the doctor knows their abilities and if she isn't confident in being able to deliver without complications, I would opt for the safest option even if that means a CS. I am sorry you have to make this decision:(
  • Do what you feel is best mama. It's your choice ultimately.

With my DS I was induced and my labor progressed rather quickly (sorry, not trying to rub it in). I pushed for 30 minutes and for most of that he was stuck due to shoulder dystocia. I'm really lucky that he ended up being totally fine but it can be a very serious thing. Because of the shoulder dystocia, my small pelvis and that DS was a bigger baby (9 pounds) I will most likely end up with a C-section this time around.

With that all being said I think its probably the best option for you and your lo if your ob and mw are in agreement to go for the c-section. But you need to do what you feel is best too. Good Luck! No matter what the end result is amazing! :)

  • Well I maxed out the pitocin and at 430 I still had not progressed past 1 cm. My wife and I made the decision that it would be safest for our son to go ahead with the c section. Not what I planned but my baby boy is here! He was 8lb 5oz but not even close to being engaged. The OB said I made the right decision. Everything feels right when he's in my arms..
  • Congrats mama!!! Not what you planned, but the outcome was what you wanted so how you got there will fade away!!

  • I was at 7 cm, water popped no luck of baby coming... We had a c-section done... The nurse did everything she could. I am glad we listened to the doctors bc the cord was wrapped around my son's neck causing his heartbeat to go up then down... It is really scary... My thought, go in with an open heart && mind with any possibility...
