Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What were your baby's milk allergy symptoms?

I don't know whether my baby is sensitive to the cow's milk in my diet. She sometimes fights breastfeeding, bobs on my breast, sometimes refuses to latch. She arches and gets a bloated belly.
We have separate bf issues including a still very damaged left nipple for which i need a shield and she has a partial aversion to the right breast. We had a tongue and lip tie revised which i don't feel were very successful.
I'm trying to determine whether to eliminate dairy products from my diet but it's a huge undertaking and I don't want to do it unless needed. (For goodness sake even deli meat has some milk protein in it!)
No rash, hives, wheezing, eczema, vomiting. Hardly any spitting up.
But she cries a lot, not sure if she's colicky.
So what made you eliminate cow's milk/dairy from your diet?

Re: What were your baby's milk allergy symptoms?

  • My baby has been a slow weight gainer from the beginning. She was having horrible gas pain and would pass has like a grown man as well as scream in pain for hours on end. She couldn't poop for 5 days or more and when she did, it was thick and green. She also did the same your little one is doing, but, I think that is do to reflux and also needing to be burped.

Anyway, I eliminated dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, and shellfish from my diet as they are all my known allergens (diagnosed via blood work). She is doing so much better now. It took a few days before I saw a difference. It wasn't until these allergens were eliminated that I realized she has pretty bad reflux too. We are going tomorrow to the Peds where I will request reflux meds.

I think a trial period of dairy free is worth a try. Depending on how much dairy you typically eat, you should see improvement in a few days. They say to give it 2 weeks to make sure the allergen is completely out of your system, then, try reintroducing it to see if there is a negative effect. Good luck!

  • It's not as common as you think and highly over diagnosed. I would try gas drops first and see if that helps. It may be reflux also.
  • My girl is 3 weeks old and super gassy (both ends), her stool changed color from mustard to sticky spinich green, then one morning there was visible blood in the stool. Pediatrician told me to cut out all dairy and go back in 2 weeks for follow up. If no improvement she has to go to a gastroenteroloist. It's been 2 days so far on the no dairy diet and I'm worried sick. I read online that it may take up to 6 weeks to start seeing improvement.
