Changing OBGYNS in 3rd trimester

So my husband changed jobs and now we have a new insurance, which my current OB doesn't accept. I asked if anyone in his practice does and they do not.. So I had to call up the new insurance and they gave me a name of a new OB but I'm in my 3rd trimester and I love my doctor. I've had him for 6 years and he's wonderful. He gave me an attitude about transferring my records over to the new doctor but it is what it is I guess. Not only am I changing doctors, but the hospital I'm delivering in also is changing. I just did my Lamaze classes at the old hospital and finished the hospital tour. I guess it's not a big deal, I'm just worried. Has anyone done this due to coverage change or something similar?

Re: Changing OBGYNS in 3rd trimester

  • Is there any ability for you to go on COBRA through your old plan just until baby is born and use that as a life event to then switch on to hubby's new plan?

Why did he give you an attitude? That's messed up, it's not your fault.

I switched mid-way through second trimester because I moved and it was totally fine if that is any relief.

  • I asked my husband to talk to his insurer about Cobra and he said he'd look into it. I got the cold shoulder from the doctor today when I went in to transfer my records... Like I purposely did this to ruin his day. Yes it is a relief! I'm just a worry wort.

I am moving at 35 weeks and will be switching too
  • Good luck to you!
  • I changed at the beginning of my second trimester. Loved my old doctor but wanted to deliver at a larger, better equipped hospital.

The transition was easy for me. If I were you I would try to get in and meet the new doctor as soon as possible. As long as it feels like a good fit to you then I wouldn't worry about it.

Now, I love my new doctor just as much!

PS super lame of him to act like that.

Right? I was so hurt that he had such a problem with it. It's not my fault we had to change coverage. We got an appointment with him Nov. 3rd the earliest to see him.
  • I am switching in 3 weeks because my original OB is leaving the state when I'm 36 weeks. It was kind of hard because he was expecting me to keep seeing him up until he leaves but my new OB wants to see me for longer than 4 weeks before my due date. I think the transition will be pretty easy!

  • I'm currently in the middle of switching. (I'm 30 weeks). My husband is deployed so I came home to family in a totally different state. I'm just anxious to get to know my new Dr...
  • My OB had a massive heart attack and passed away during my second trimester last time. Thus I had to switch at about 26 weeks. I'm in a rural area so there was exactly two other choices. I was NOT happy about going to a new OB especially one that was considered "old-fashioned." I was proven wrong and he is wonderful. As in when I got a nasty stomach bug came to the emergency room to oversee that I was being treated correctly. Give the new one a chance.

    good luck
  • @thepanicos I'm still so annoyed he gave you a hard time. Did you ask him if he wanted to treat you for free since he doesn't take your insurance? Like really, what were you supposed to do? I don't know what state you are in, but when I switched just primary care doctors from mine in NJ, I got this long letter saying it was my legal right to get copies of my records but I had to pay for them first. They were charging my $85 which seemed crazy for some photocopies (although 10 years of records). Anyway, it made me mad because I have probably referred at least 8 co-workers to this doctor. I haven't paid yet and am thinking about calling to complain.
  • I am changing for a third time when I am 33 weeks. Each change has involved a new doctor, birth plan and to top it off new country.

Change of circumstances: first time health risks, then a passport issue and so now we are going to be making our 3rd move.

When I told this doctor I'm currently with I was sad, I kept referring to it as if I was breaking up with him. I did the whole it's not you its me thing! He took it well almost to well! Ha!

@ChrissyD1203 my husband said it may be for the best if we switched anyway, maybe a blessing. My last appointment I was left in the exam room for an hour before he came in and the only reason he came in was because I opened the door because I was having a hot flash. I'm pretty sure he forgot about me. I live in NY. Today; his receptionist who I'm guessing they left the record transfers to do, called me up and said the new doctor that I was seeing (had to provide on form) was amazing and was also her doctor and she loved him. I suppose that's a good sign too. My boss was ticked off as well; he said "should you pay cash to deliver your baby then? Or would he like to pay?"
