Crampy after first ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound today we are 7w4d and was very surprised at how much digging around the tech did without telling me anything, some of it was rather painful too. Thankfully she quickly told us there was a strong heartbeat when she started or else I would have been freaking out. I had some immediate brown spotting after and cramping the rest of the day. The tech nor the Dr. mentioned cramping but have heard a few say they had cramping but was just curious about others experiences. Guess I'm taking it easy today.

Re: Crampy after first ultrasound?

  • Transvaginal ultrasounds can cause cervical irritation (I presume thats the type you got?) which can surely lead to spotting. Not sure about the cramping, I'm almost 5 weeks and have had fairly normal cramping since a few days before I got a positive test. I would probably give your doc a call just to be sure that it's all normal to air on the side of caution but it doesn't sound out of the norm to my non-medically trained self.

  • After my first ultrasound I actually spotted for 2 days with some cramping. My doctor told me that it would likely happen and its normal due to the ultrasound causing irritation. As long as it doesn't become heavy or bright red you shouldn't worry. They also may have been "digging around" just to check your uterus and both ovaries which can be unpleasant.
  • I get cramping and spotting when they do a regular pap smear. I haven't had my ultrasound yet, but I'm sure its the irritation to the cervix.

  • Thank you for posting this. I would freak if that happens. My appointment is in about 3 weeks.
