Strange First Appointment

So, I had a strange experience today at my first appointment. The midwife did an internal ultrasound and couldn't find anything. She then tried it on the outside and found the tiny little bean. Based off of LMP I should be 7 weeks today, but the external ultrasound dated me at 6w 3d. We could see the heart beat, but she couldn't get the sound of the heartbeat, so I don't know the bpm. I don't really know what to think. It's so strange she couldn't find it during the internal! Do you think because we could only measure from the external that has anything to do with why I am dating a few days behind? Is dating 3/4 days behind at this point something to be concerned with? I left the appointment bewildered but emailed my doctor all these questions after I got back to work.

Re: Strange First Appointment

  • I had mine today. Had to do internal to find anything.

Doc did say that since I just emptied my bladder (they wanted to test the urine). that it was making everything harder to find. And we weren't able to catch the heartbeat for a long time. Maybe just 2 seconds but she was able to measure that.

  • A few days off is pretty normal. It's often hard for them to get a heartbeat before 7 weeks, so the fact that you heard it is great. It's hard not to worry, but it sounds like everything is fine.

  • My lo is measuring 1w5d behind where we should be. Er doc wasn't worried, I have an appt with my ob next friday. From what I've read sometimes they measure off when they are so little
  • Was your bladder full? A full bladder makes it difficult to see on an internal ultrasound as the bladder pushes the uterus out of view. I wouldn't worry about measuring a little behind. It sounds like you've got a healthy little bean in there! Congrats!

  • No, I had just emptied my bladder. Alright, I guess if a couple people on the Internet say it's okay, I will try and just relax.

  • With my last the measured date was 8 days after what my LMP suggested. It's totally normal. Some women ovulate late in the cycle than others. I am one of those. If your doctor didn't seem concerned then I wouldn't worry. I know it's easier said than done though.

  • 3/4 days is normal. You might have ovulated a little later than you think and it might have taken a little longer to implant.

  • I measured almost 2weeks late and they said because I was on clomid and that was my first actual cycle in forever that it's normal (now I'm either may 30 or June 5 so I'm stuck in limbo!!)
  • From my understanding, 7 weeks is still pretty early to see things on u/s, which is why they typically do them around 8-10 weeks, so as not to freak anybody out for no reason. Since they were able to find something from the external ultrasound, I wouldn't be too worried! That sounds like things are doing what they should!

  • when I was pg with my daughter they couldn't find her on the internal either, they ended up switching to external and found her. I was 8 weeks then and they told me sometimes it depends on where the baby attaches. I was also measuring behind but they weren't worried. She is now a happy and healthy 14 month old.
  • Women don't always have textbook cycles and going off lmp can be off. Unless you were temping or confirmed ovulation with an ultrasound your dates could easily be off. Even if your dates aren't off, ultrasounds can go a week either way on babies age. I wouldn't be concerned. Good luck.
