Heating Pad

Sorry to clutter the board - but I didn't see this question asked anywhere yet.

I know that a lot of people are still experiencing cramping so I thought this might be relevant to more than just me. I am currently 5w5d and am still getting occasional cramping - no bleeding, no take your breath away cramps or I would have gone to my MD. I have an electric heating pad at home that I've used in the past for bad menstrual cramps, that I have used about 3 times for cramping during this pregnancy so far (on low). I am using it on my abdomen, and I know that the baby is still hidden in my pelvis so it's not directly on top of baby. I'm going to the doctor for my 6 week appointment on Monday and will ask her then to be safe. I honestly thought nothing of it until my mom (a nurse) said she wasn't sure it was a good idea.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Heating Pad

  • My OB said a heat pad was just fine! I use one on my back almost daily.

  • I think you're not supposed to use them actually...I know you're not supposed to use electric blankets. You just don't want to get too hot. I personally wouldn't do it.

  • I don't know about electric heating pads... last time my midwife had me use the kind with beans that you heat in the microwave for back pain during the second trimester. Does you mom worry about the heat or the electromagnetic (or whatever) waves?
  • My OB said fine!
  • I don't know what exactly my mom was worried about @kittenslove... She kind of freaked me out a little. I'm a nurse too and didn't think it was an issue... But generally mom's always right. Right? ;)

  • Wait, are you really not supposed to use electric blankets when pregnant? Even if you're careful not to get sweaty/red? I use an electric blanket all winter long to warm my bed/warm me a bit when I get into bed.

Please don't tell me I have to get rid of my electric blanket. Please! Something else to add to my list of questions for my next appointment I suppose.
  • @danalynn86 an electric blanket is fine if just used to warm, and isn't hot enough to raise your core temperature. If it turns your skin red, it's probably too hot.

  • Heating pads are fine. My Bradley coach filled a large sock with rice and then put a few drops of essential oil in it. I used it my whole third trimester.
  • According to my ob a heating pad is fine as long as its on low and preferably not directly on the abdomen. Just as long as you aren't raising your core temperature its fine.

  • I am also having bad cramps and today my OB said I can use a heating pad for 5 minutes at a time on my stomach
