Spotted last week, transvaginal ultrasound next week

Hey everyone,

I often find myself afraid to ask my doctors office too many questions because then I'd seem like a problematic patient but withholding these questions really leaves me in the dark.  I feel like I'll probably teeter back and forth with this throughout the pregnancy.  This is my first time and I really don't know how to speak up or when it's appropriate.

Anyway, I started spotting last week and it lasted for about three days.  I was horrified because it was reminiscent of my miscarriage last time.  It started off as spotting and then within 24 hours it was a heavy flow.  This time, however, it stopped.  I went in for blood tests and I tested at 79,000 the first time and 125,000 the second.  I'm 7 weeks and 4 days pregnant today, and have an ultrasound appointment for the 29th.  I feel like I'm going to drive myself nuts with all of the possible causes for this up until the actual appointment.  The nurse says that "sometimes this just happens" and that's the last explanation I really want to hear, even though know it's probably the only explanation she can give.

Have any of you had spotting in early pregnancy?  How do you hang on without having a total breakdown?

  • Sorry I haven't experienced this, but I know that spotting is normal and a lot of people have it (although it's still scary).

Ask your doctor all your questions!! Even the ones that seem silly. Dr. Google will just scare you, your doctor can help ease your mind. They hear a lot of questions from FTMs, nothing will surprise them. My last pregnancy I was probably the most "problematic" patient on earth. Part of the reason for your appts though is so you can ask all your questions.

  • I went through the same thing over the weekend.  I had spotting, after spin class.  They monitored my levels for a few days and everything looked okay HCG 196-->12700-->22400.  My Progesterone is 13, but my OB doesn't believe in progesterone supplementing if I can get pregnant.  Hard to believe since everyone on here that has low progesterone is on some sort of supplement.  Read the research myself and it confirms her beliefs, so I'm going with it.  I had a TV ultrasound last Friday @ 5w4d and only saw a yolk and sack.  I have another one this Friday at 6w4d to see if we are growing appropriately.  So I understand your concerns and sympathize with how stressful it is.  My spotting stopped so far.  My mom said she spotted and cramped with me, so I am just staying positive.  My OBGYN I worked with and she has been amazing, calls me/emails me, it has been really comforting, but she did say time will tell and nature will decide (in my words).  I was upset Sunday and then I just realized if it's meant to be it's meat to be, being anxious is only going to cause more issues.
  • No personal experience with spotting but just remember, your OB is there to support YOU during your pregnancy! They are there to advocate for what is best for you and your baby. They prefer you have lots of questions instead of leaving unsatisfied. They should always be there for you. If you don't feel comfortable talking to them, find a new OB. They took the extra time to be a specialist because delivering babies and preparing mommy-to-be is what they love to do. You should never feel like you are a burden to your doctor (it's why they make the big bucks!)

  • I definitely remember spotting for a few days with my first pregnancy, and everything turned out fine.

Never keep questions to yourself because your'e afraid of being a nuisance or "problematic". As pps have said your drs and OB/midwife etc are there to support you and answer these questions - there's no way everyone just knows this and what's normal etc.

    Hang in there, mama!

  • I hear you. I've had spotting more days than not since probably three days before my expected period date which obviously wasn't a period haha. (I'll be 7 weeks pregnant on Oct 25th) it's worrisome even though I had this past pregnancy and my son is almost 5 and healthy as can be. I have a req for an ultrasound this Friday so I'm going to go to hopefully ease my mind. It's tough though but sounds like you have a supportive care provider. Take care!

Yes, I had spotting early in my last pregnancy, which ended with full-term twins. I was terrified, and couldn't relax until 12 weeks. I'm sorry you're going through this-it is scary. Please keep us updated.
