Let me start by saying I work nights as an ER nurse. On Oct 12 I was at work when a co-worker said to me. "your face looks a bit puffy, maybe you should check your blood pressure." (Mind you my feet and legs were also swollen as they had been since week 35.) I was shocked when my blood pressure read 160/110 and made them check it at least 5 more times. With my access to medical equipment I dipped my urine and found that it was positive for protein. I was starting to panic a little on the inside. I had none of the other symptoms of pre-eclampsia. No shortness of breath, chest pain, blurred vision. Nothing. After calling my OB and being told to make my way to L&D immediately, I called the hubby and left work. I was in total denial and fully expected to get sent home. However, after some blood work and my BP staying constantly high I was diagnosed w/ Pre-E and told that I needed to be induced. I was the woman who wanted everything to go naturally, but my little one had other plans. I started by getting an epidural (I wasn't allowed to try to go au-natural because they said once the real contractions started my BP would only get higher. So after the epidural was in the Pitocin got started. I was already 5cm dilated on arrival and having contractions 3-5 min apart (which I didn't even feel). After a few hours on Pit they broke my water to get things moving and I went from 5 to 9 in an hour. I was feeling some intense pressure and pain at this time and kept telling my nurse who didn't seem concerned and said that the "pressure was something I was just going to have to deal with" and that they were going to have me labor down so I didn't have to push for a long time. Finally I convinced the nurse to check me and she got the resident in the room right away. The resident tells me to try two practice pushes. I did 1 and a half and they told me to stop and called the doctor. At this point however, there was no stopping. None of these people had there gloves on or were ready to deliver a baby. On the next contraction I could tell there was no stopping baby and started yelling at them to please catch my baby and that the baby was coming. I wasn't in stirrups and was still fully covered with the blanket. Baby Evelyn Catherine came out all on her own and they hit the emergency button and about 20 people along w/ my OB finally showed up. Luckily my little angel was just fine. Born at 38w 4d on 10/12/15 at 5lb and 13 oz. I will be on blood pressure medication for 6 weeks, but we are otherwise healthy and I am loving being a mommy. Moral of the story, pay attention to your body. I would have never checked my BP that night if it hadn't been for my coworker.
