Baby / Birthing Book Recommendations

My copy of Heading Home With Your Newborn came yesterday (by Laura Jana -- Third Edition). I've only read the first 20 pages but I'm obsessed and if anyone is freaked out because like me they feel they don't know the first thing about babies, I highly recommend it. It was like $13 on Amazon Prime. Not saying I support any of the positions the author takes, but it seems informative and the writing is very easy to read.

Re: Baby / Birthing Book Recommendations

  • Thanks for the recommendation! I have been meaning to find a good book for my husband and I to read about newborn care, we are a little nervous as first timers ☺

  • DH and I read Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way by Susan McCutcheon. Even though I had planned a hospital delivery, it really helped me to cope with labor pains and for him to know how to help me through it.

A parenting book I was given from a lady at my church that was great for me and DH was Preparation for Parenting By Gary Ezzo. It is a Christian parenting book about family, parenting, and marriage.

I loved the Baby Whisperer books by Tracy Hogg and also Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems by Richard Ferber. Both really helped me establish a good solid routine with my son and he's been sleeping through the night in his own bed since 8 months old (Is now over 2 yrs).

Hope these are useful to any other moms :)

  • I love the book by the American Academy of Pediatrics Caring for your baby and young child. I'm getting it for SO since it has a lot of info so he will have a resource to look things up.
  • Thanks @kristanoah I have the first book you mentioned--- I'm still in the beginning but I'm finding the author's tone a little condescending. I'm going to order a Baby Whisper one right now.
  • I just finished reading The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by the La Leche League International. I really enjoyed it and I was surprised how comprehensive it was! It even included a whole section on birth and potential effects on breastfeeding and the mother child relationship...things I had not even considered before. It also has a whole "tool kit" section that will be helpful for me to remember shortcuts to make life easier after LO is here. DH enjoyed learning about things from the book with me as well.
  • These recommendations are all awesome!  Adding them to my list.  Also, has anyone read the Happiest Baby on the Block?  I've had that one recommended to me by a couple of friends.  Thoughts?
  • Yes all the recs are great! @maureenmce I have not but awesome title. Let us know how it is if you get it.
  • @maureenmce - I LOVED that book. My husband is currently reading it. He finds it a little repetitive as far as the steps listed in every chapter, but my preggo brain loved it. I definitely had it all memorized by the end.
  • I LOVED Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth. My husband is reading The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin, and I'm going to read The New Bestfeeding by Mary Renfrew.
