Thinking I want to use one...anyone have any recommendations.....experiences to note? (good or bad)

We used a doula and absolutely loved her! At first, it seems like an extra cost that you don't want to deal with, but during the labor and after the delivery it was sooo worth it. Check out www.kcdoulas.org for kc doulas.
We used Heather Berry and she was absolutely wonderful. My husband was so happy she was there to support through labor. They're especially wonderful if you are trying to go med-free. Heather's website is: newcreationdoula.blogspot.com She also does birth photography. Good luck!
I didn't use a doula this time around but we will definitely be using one the next time. I haven't decided if I want to use one for the birth or just for post partum support when we go home. Our childbirth class instructor, Vanessa Flood, is a doula and I thought about contacting her for next time around. She was very nice and seemed very knowledgable.
