January 2016 Moms

Anybody drinking red raspberry leaf tea?

I bought red raspberry leaf tea to hopefully shorten labor with second baby.

I was wondering if any second time moms can tell me if it worked for them, or anybody trying it for the first time?

Re: Anybody drinking red raspberry leaf tea?

  • It really just a uterine tonic, which won't make your labour easier or faster - but just strengthens your uterine muscles to make your contractions more effective.

Like any herbal and medicinal remedies, I think it's important to do your research on it. There are some women who are not good candidates, and it's important to drink it in moderation. How many weeks are you? Personally, I would avoid it until much later on.

  • I've started rasperry leaf tablets just this week, and I started drinking the tea (though haven't had it every day) last week. I'm a scientist, and I normally don't think much of 'herbal/old wives tales', but I have a number of trusted family members who swear by it-mum, aunty, grandma, cousin (who has 2 kids herself and is a midwife). There is a lot of contradicting/inconclusive research about it, which I find very frustrating, but I guess it just boils down to whatever you feel comfortable with, keep an eye out for any side effects, and keep your midwife/ob in the loop. I asked my midwife her thoughts and she said obviously its hard to tell how much of a good labour is due raspberry leaf, and how much was going to be good anyway, but that she delivered a baby the previous week, first time mum, and bub only took 4 hrs, which doesnt happen very often (the mum was taking raspberry leaf).
  • Like @holocene said it's thought to tone the uterus not induce or encourage labor. However I guess it's not impossible that a strong uterus would produce more effective contractions but I wouldn't put all your eggs in that basket. I plan on drinking it later.. prob at 32 weeks or so.
  • I drank it to aid in getting pregnant by thickening the uterine lining. I thought that was its primary use in regards to pregnancy.

  • @happyandhopeful3 I did the same. It pretty much just helps promote a healthy and strong uterus that the embryo wants to implant in, and subsequently is better prepared for delivery. That's the thought anyway.

Some useful information.  Make sure you do lots of reading before drinking herbal teas while pregnant.

Edit: I also drank it when TTC (definitely not saying it helped me conceive, but I did HAPPEN to be drinking it the cycle that I did conceive).

  • I drank it with my daughter! I had to be induced but my labor was fairly short and I only pushed for 20 minutes. I plan on starting around 35 weeks.

  • Thanks all! I'm 28 weeks for the record. And starting with one cup a day and not working up to the recommended four cups a day until 32 weeks.

My midwife recommended it after I bought it up, and I know very little research has been done on it, mostly anecdotal, and any 'studies' can show correlation, which I know isn't necessarily causation. Post hoc.

I'm hoping it will tone my uterus as others said and logic would suggest that may make labor more efficient. Fingers crossed.

    Thanks for the input all.
  • I am 29 weeks and will start drinking it ny 32 weeks. I read a lot of articles on this and I didn't see a reason why not to drink it. Anything that helps with labor. We should do another post after delivery to see if we all had easier labors! I really hope this helps.
  • I drank it with my last 2 and the labours were quick ( 6 hours and 4 & 1/2 hours) so I think it definately helps. Although their labours were more painful! But that may just be a coincidence?!!! I started drinking it at 30 weeks ish with both of them. Make sure you get pure raspberry leaf from a health food shop as many teas listed as raspberry leaf contain a very small amount! Good luck ladies. I will be taking it again soon. Currently 26+3
  • I drank it with my first pregnancy and used evening primrose oil as well. I was induced but only had a 5 hour labor. I have no idea if it helped or not truly but I plan to do it again this time.
