BBT not going up even though I think I ovulated?

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of doing TI this month after femara/gonal-f combo and then trigger shot of novarel on Sunday the 18th (10am).  We've BD'ed every night since the trigger to be sure, and I've also been tracking my BBT, but only since a day prior to the trigger (I didn't get it in the mail until then!).  I took an OPK and it was positive on Tuesday, and since I did the trigger I'm fairly sure I've already ovulated.  I had some mild cramping and pressure in my abdomen on Monday night, so figured it was coming.

Problem is my temperature according to my BBT theromoter is not spiking yet.  Is this cause for concern?  Shouldn't it have spiked by now if I ovulated?  My RE advised me not to take my BBT because she said it could get confusing and wasn't always accurate and they could always do a progresterone test to make sure I'd ovulated.  Does anyone have any suggestions at this point?  Thanks for your help!

-Emily

Re: BBT not going up even though I think I ovulated?

  • My trigger shot makes my BBT jump.  I've read that the meds can mess with your temps
  • Loading the player...
  • I would not expect too much from temping.  My RE said it's not a big deal, and the acupuncturist I am starting to see said that sleep irregularities can mess with it, so if you are up in the middle of the night or otherwise not a sound sleeper, it may not be that helpful.  I would also think that if you haven't even temped for a full cycle, you might not have a feel for what is your "normal" and what to look for in your charts.

  • You don't look at a BBT chart based on a few temps.  It's an overall shift.  However, you don't really have many pre-O to compare to.  You should have O'd on Tuesday (36 hours after trigger).  I wouldn't worry about this cycle.  Also, your first 2 circles are open.  Did you temp at the same time each morning (within 15 minutes) and after 3 hours sleep?

I would skip analyzing this cycle and try to do better for next.  It's hard to say much without many "before" temps.  Also, what brand is your thermometer?

  • @bsckgb7 my bbt thermometer is pretty cheap, it's from Fairhaven Health- found it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017RZHYY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00.  Yes I temped at the same time each morning--just didn't do it enough I guess!  I think you're right, I need to just start again next cycle (if I need to try next cycle...let's hope it's a BFP this time around!)

  • @emgem819 you might want to get a mabis. They are about the same price, but many people have issues with the other brands "favoring" a certain temp. I was getting the same two temps no matter what the circumstance. I knew it wasn't accurate.

RE DX for me: Anovulatory cycles/Mild PCOS  RE DX for DW: Endometrioma on left Ovary.
Reciprocal Ivf Feb 2016. DW eggs and I am carrying. EDD: 10/27/16

  • Do you have another thermometer in the house to compare to?  Not necessarily a BBT, just another one?  Looks the the reviews for that thermometer are pretty hit-or-miss.  Lots of reviews saying it comes with a crappy battery life.  Maybe take your temperature tonight with the "new" one and then with an old one.  Make sure they are at least similar readings.

Cheapie BBTs are fine.  If you have to buy another one, get a Mabis.  It's still less than 10 bucks and whats all the TTGP ladies use.
  • Thanks @bsckgb7 and @twomommiestobe looks like the Mabis will be my next purchase...good to have something that will be a sure thing next time. Appreciate the advice!

  • I also thinks the meds mess with your temps.  I've had two REs and my accupuncturist tell me to stop temping, for my medicated IUIs.

I still track it, but I track it with a big grain of salt.  For myself, I've found that my temperature tends to rise a couple days after O.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @emgem819 with BBT you are looking for a bi-phasic pattern to detect ovulation. What shows that you Od isn't a high temp, but a upward sustained shift of 2 tenths from earlier in the cycle. For instance, in cd1-16 you could range btwn 97.2-97.9 but generally be 97.7 then you would find you shift up to 79.9 and go between 79.9 and 98.2 for the remainder of the cycle.

From your page you can't deduce ovulation as pp said. Your cd3 bw before your next cycle will show if you did in fact ovulate, but not when. Like you said, next cycle if needed just start bbt from cd1. The meds can skew it, but even on the meds, I saw a clear bi phasing shift and found temping helpful. At least if the pattern is not there, but your hormone levels at cd3 show ovulation you can know that it's the meds. :D GL!
  • So I woke up this morning and had the opposite happen. I am scheduled for an IUI today and my temperature spiked this morning. Usually the temp spike signals that ovulation already happened, but I'm choosing to think that my RE's office knows what they are doing when they looked at my BW and US yesterday. I think for me, temping is taken with a grain of salt :) GL!!

  • @erica0901 I ovulate on my own too, but I get a trigger shot anyway not so much to assist in O, but to time O for TI. It helps remove the possibility you'll O prior to an IUI or TI anf assists the RE in scheduling the IUI. I'd recommend it if this one doesn't take.
