Only 2 vessel cord should I be worried??!! please help need others oppinions

For my 2nd trimester we were so happy to find out were having a girl. But then the doctor tells us that she only has 2 vessel cords when there's suppose to be 3. He didn't seem to concerned to just said might lead to lower birth weight. But. Older studies showd complications with this in children with chromosome issues. So I had my down syndrome test done that came back negative but is not 100% accurate. Should I pursue this more or not loose any sleep and chances are she's fine.

Chances are she's fine.. FWIW, I had (have?) this, when my mom was pregnant with me and I'm almost 30 and still kickin'! I was a NICU baby, but I had other issues that I don't think this played into at all...

It can be an indicator of Edwards Syndrome (trisonomy 18), but it's not all that common, so if you had the chromosomal test and your doctor isn't concerned there's no reason you should either.

ETA: spellcheck and added to my last sentence.

  • If it was me, is ask for more testing! Good luck, growing baby's are hard!
  • I had this with my second. I worried the whole time, while my doc reassured me she was fine and she was perfectly healthy. Birthweight was normal and you'd never know anything was different. I completely understand your panic. I was the same way. Just know it can all be perfectly fine!
  • This is fairly common and the majority of the time there's no complications with this. My friend had this and they monitored her more often bc of it but she had a perfectly healthy pregnancy and a perfectly healthy boy who's 6 now. She was completely freaked out too but everything was ok. Stay off doctor Google though!

  • I'm pretty sure there was another post about this a while back if you use the search function. I remember there being some good info on that thread. One concern is that the cord forms at the same time as some of the other organs, so they will take a close look at them. I wouldn't worry too much over the chromosomal disorder if your testing came back good. Did your OB recommend additional testing?
  • It depends on which artery is missing, generally speaking you will see greater abnormality when it's the left (such as with Edwards). Abnormalities caused by cromasomal abnormality would definitely have been picked up at the A/S, so unlikely something to worry about.
  • Thanx every one for the feed back I just needed to hear from other moms that have went through it. This has definitely eased my mind. I will search now recent post on this to get an even bigger insight but you ladies were much help. :)
  • @MammaGeorge22 - I had this with DS and he turned out perfect!

My primary OB set me up with a high risk OB for monitoring.  Not sure if your doctor plans to do the same but I also had really high BP which also compounded the issue.  At the high risk OB I had a weekly ultrasound and NSTs but would follow-up with my primary OB who I saw every other week until my BP got worse and then had to see him weekly.

While DS was on the 'smaller' side when he was born he gained weight quick enough and you'd never know today.

My primary OB made sure I knew it was a fluke and there was nothing I could have done to cause it/prevent it.  However he said it was rare for it to happen again and I can assure you this pregnancy is very different from my first.  :)

  • Lurking from March. One of my twins has this also and so far the only additional test I have done is a fetal echocardiogram to make sure his heart is developing correctly. I plan on discussing the next steps with my OB on Tuesday.

From all my research online I think we are in good shape as the link to the trisomony disorders has not been proven and genetic testing while not 100% accurate has already provided the risk factor. My understanding is that with a SVU we have a 30% risk of complications, however, a large portion of that percentage includes having a smaller baby.
  • My baby has this too. My understanding is that it is more of an anatomy difference that could possibly cause problems, but often doesn't. Their bodies adjust to the two vessel cord and do just fine. I get an extra ultrasound to double check development because of this but baby was developing just fine at the anatomy scan, so they aren't too worried about it. Remember, it's just an anomaly with the umbilical cord, and once the baby is born, they don't need the umbilical cord anymore. So as long as they develop healthy, there is no concern after birth whatsoever.
