Food for Dad's at the hospital

For the stay in the hospital, did you pack meals for your husbands or did they just eat the cafeteria food? Wondering if there would be an option for him to eat some food prepared ahead of time...Is there a fridge in the room you stay in?

Re: Food for Dad's at the hospital

  • I am just packing protein granola bars, Gatorade, and maybe trail mix for him. I guess he will eat cafeteria food if he needs to, or his parents may go out and get something for us.

I would call your own hospital to see if they have a refrigerator in the labor and/or recovery rooms or one that you can have access to. Another idea is to bring an ice chest.

  • At my hospital they only have meals available for those who are admitted. (At least included with the pricing for our stay.) Nice thing that the nurse told me though is that the baby counts as one person being admitted as well for that, and dads are allowed to have the baby's meal. That's what we did last time, and probably will this time. Otherwise he'll probably just grab a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant.
  • Our room did not have a fridge, but there was a nutrition room with sodas/juice/milk in a fridge that we were able to use as long as we marked and dated our food.
We were there for 3 nights and caught on real quick, we started ordering two meals at a time from the hospital . Why shouldn't we be entitled
to two meals , after all DH is living there and I'm sure the bill will be a fortune. There was no problem with doing this and no one said anything, once they went forgot he second meal and brought it up 20 minutes later .
  • Uhhh.... if I can't eat hubby can't eat lol. Call it what you want but I think it's mean for him to be eating anything yummy that I have to smell while I'm in labor and can only have ice and water. He can go out and get both of us something yummy once the baby and I are moved to the post-natal floor

Haha! I understand this. We have a scheduled csection because baby is breech. So I was mostly asking because we will be in the hospital for about 3-4 days after and it seems like a lot for us to pay for that many meals at the cafeteria for him!
  • I threw a couple granola bars in my hospital bag but beyond that...he's a big boy! He can go to the cafeteria or my parents can bring him something. Too many other things to worry about haha
  • DH went to the cafeteria and bought himself something. We were in the hospital for 5 days and he benefited from stepping out of the room.
  • We brought snacks to the hospital and then we each ordered food from the hospital cafeteria while we were there. There was also a mini cafeteria in L&D that had coffee, tea, juice and water and some small snacks.

I also let DH order food while I was in labor. He ended up not eating much of it because when the food came my labor kicked up a notch and baby was here pretty soon after. But I don't see why Dad shouldn't be able to eat. Someone needs their energy for after baby comes after all!
  • In my view I think it is important to let our husbands eat, so that they can support us better. I know mine can get "hangry" if he doesn't eat, just like I can. We don't need both of us hangry in a potentially very exhausting situation! That said, I am preferring that he stick with what I am bringing him - granola bars, trail mix, etc. Nothing that will be hot and smell tantalizing! I will be able to drink clear liquids throughout labor I think so I can drink Gatorade, juice, etc. to keep my blood sugar up.
  • Our birth class teacher encouraged us to have our husbands eat because they can pass out from low blood sugar. My hospital let my husband order a tray for $7.
  • We packed some snacks, there was a fridge down the hall that he could use, and he otherwise either ate cafeteria food or went somewhere for takeout, and he went home for a few meals as well.

  • I guess I'm of the mindset that husbands are adults and need to figure out their own food needs. At most I would mention it to him and have him pack his own snacks. We have enough going on.
  • I would call and ask your L and D floor. My husband can order three meals a day for himself while he is there with me and it's covered under our stay.
  • I packed snacks for both him and me for labor and immediately after. From there he and I both had takeout for all of our meals. He went out and got food for both of us. Way better than hospital food!!!
  • We packed snacks. Although he wanted real food. Since my water broke at 520 am I hadn't eaten since 8-9pm the night before, my hubby wanted me to order food. I didn't want to eat but finally decided I could eat fruit and cottage cheese so he called to order it. They wanted his credit card number on the phone. He was like I'm ordering on behalf of my wife who is in labor. They finally just let him order for me. By the time it got to my room I wasn't able to eat because I was getting fluids to prepare for my epidural. He ended up eating it anyway. After that anytime we wanted food we made sure I called and ordered extra food for him. I'm sure either way it gets slapped on the hospital bill but they sure made it unconvienient for him to call on behalf of me.
  • My husband actually bought us food every time. If we wanted a snack he would just go to the vending machine. With my third baby the hospital had a Starbucks and a Mexican place next to the cafeteria. So he bought food from there too.
  • My SO are in the cafeteria once and had them bring him a tray twice and we had family members who brought us food a couple of times! I also packed a couple snacks for him for while I was in labor
  • Definitely ask your hospital. Ours has little cubbies on each hall in maternity with a ton of ready to eat food and drinks that mom and dad are welcome to. Then during the stay there is on demand, all you can eat room delivery for mom to order. All nurses told me since it's all you can eat, I have to place the order but just to order enough for him too :) the food was amazing when we had our first and seriously am so looking forward to the hospital stay again lol

  • Our friends stressed the importance of a snack bag, so my hubby went to Target a month ago and loaded up on his favorite and they are packed right next to his hospital bag!! All I want is Chocolates from my hometown so my parents are bring those and a stash for the nurses as well!!
