4 Week Old Still Waking Up at Night

Is it weird for my four week old to still be waking up every three hours to eat? He's like clock work every three hours he eats at least 3 ounces. Anyone else's four week still eat this much?

Re: 4 Week Old Still Waking Up at Night

  • Yes mine does. It's every two though.
  • Loading the player...
  • Mines every 4..isnt this normal?
  • Mine sleeps a four hour stretch then two and two; at 6 weeks. This is like clockwork! I'm super paranoid about SIDS and set my alarm for these a half hour past his normal feeding times (just so I wake up to check in case for some reason he is not up when I expect him to) and I never make it to my alarm, he is up at those hour intervals like expected. I'm EBF so I'm not sure how many ounces or anything like that but I'd say you're more than normal!
  • Mine does the same.  I believe it's normal.
  • My 6 week old still wakes up every 2-3 hours to eat and eats around 3oz each time..... I've heard every two hours is totally common up to 8 weeks... Hoping for a bit mood sleep after that! Fingers crossed!

I wish my baby would give me three hours in a row! 4 weeks on Friday and he's up every hour and a half to two hours and he feeds for an hour each time! Then sometimes he just screams for four hours in a row.
  • 6 week old does a 5 then 3 just recently but it's like clock work
  • 4.5 weeks. Up every two hours. Up now. Gahhh.

  • My 4 week old still has days and nights switched. We are up from 2-3am till about 6-7am when he finally wants to sleep again

  • I feel ya, @jweber4747 - This is us too and we're at 5 weeks today. Our nightly scream session usually wraps up around 4:30am, and then we zonk out for 3-4 hours.
  • My first woke every 2 hours until he was 4 months old at which point it got even worse due to the four month sleep regression.  Totally normally, some babies are just crummy sleepers.
  • He picks and chooses. Some days he feeds every 2 hours others it's every 3 to 4. I just sleep when he sleeps (or relax during the day go recharge). I don't mind the baby snuggles when he won't fall back to sleep but it definitely been exhausting. We've got this ladies!
  • My 4 week old does it every 3 near enough.

My 4 week old just spent the past 4/5 hours crying on and off. Falling asleep then 10 minutes later waking up or crying. She seems to do it at the same time and fall asleep around the same time too. She's done it nearly every night this week
  • My tiny man thinks cribs and bedtimes are for suckers. We're up about every 90 minutes or less starting at 9pm, with an awake stretch between 4:30am-8. I don't know who thinks your baby should be sleeping through the night at 4 weeks, but they either know very little about the reality of baby schedules, or have forgotten. (Or maybe they were one of the rare lucky ones. It happens!) Don't let it bother you a bit! Baby is perfectly normal. In fact, if he's feeding at fairly regular, 3 hour intervals, you're ahead of the game haha.
  • I believe babies aren't able to sleep through the night until around three months. Obviously some babies do before then but the average is three months. Mine didn't sleep through the night the whole first year.
  • My daughter is 6 weeks old and she will sleep for usually 5-6 hours at night. Last night we got 8 hours! Best invention is the nightime lotion works every night. We just give her a larger bottle after her baths or night routine.

And keep in mind "sleeping through the night" means six hours.

My first still had one nighttime feeding until he was 9 months.
  • Other moms also start putting rice into formula or breastmilk to make it thicker so they sleep longer. I didn't start that with my daughter til she was a 2.5 months (she's now 3). My 1 month old is sleeping about 2-3 hours, so I only get up maybe 2-3 times a night. He eats 3-4 oz of formula each time.

I LOLed at this question. Totally normal. It's awhile before they sleep through the night. They need to eat frequently for several months. Their tummies are tiny and they're growing fast.

This. I just read on a different board were a mom is struggling nursing her 14month old 2-3x per night. 8-X

This is not recommended. Rice cereal is empty calories. Babies need all their calories coming from BM or formula until at least four months (most would say six).

    Ahh poor woman!

Also I love seeing this question in the forum thread, it always makes me smile. My friend and I are the first in our circle with babies and we'll always check up on each other with questions like "is she walking and cooking dinner yet? play any sports?" We have fun with it because it's just funny how clueless some outsiders are.

Oh and I'm not laughing at the OP, I promise. I'd get really paranoid if everyone around me was asking that too. You're doing fine and your baby will sleep through the night eventually. They all will :-)
  • Last night we got 8nhours tonight it's almost 2 am and she still hasn't gone to sleep
  • My nearly 6 week old baby has slept 9 hours 4 nights in a row now. Shes breast fed and is 11lb5oz(so shes far from starved!) We are so lucky xxx
  • My 7 week old eats every 2 hours, day or night. :\
