Child Care Issues (previous loss mentioned)

Has anyone else had a lot of problems finding child care? I've called the only places I would feel safe taking my child to and they all have 1+ year waiting lists. And none of these places will take a 6 month old, they wait until they are a year, so if a spot just happens to come up in the summer, I'm SOL. Neither me nor my husband can quit our jobs. Being a FTM I had no clue it would be this difficult. I didn't know I was supposed to start looking that far in advance. None of my friends had this problem because they were able to be SAHM, they have family to help, or they worked opposite of their hubbies. None of those are possible for us. I don't know what to do. How are you supposed to sign up for daycare before you even know that you are pregnant? I waited for viability because of two previous miscarriages. So now I'm almost to my third trimester and have no clue what I am going to do for childcare.

  • This all might come off as procrastination and whiny, but I would have thought 6 months would have been more than enough time (three more months of pregnancy + 12 weeks FMLA). One year waiting list seems like you have to pee on a stick get a positive and immediately start tracking down daycare before you even go to the doctor. I would have never thought it would be this difficult. We don't even live in a big city.

  • What about a nanny or a nanny share? Have you looked into those.
  • You're probably going to have to cast a wider net. You may not get a location that's the most convenient, but it could hold you over while you're waiting out the first year. At this point it's likely that you'll have to wait on an infant list as well, but maybe some of your SAHM friends can help you fill in the gap? One of my friends ran into a similar situation with care for her son. I took him every Friday and other friends and part time daycare filled in the other days. Good luck!
  • Unfortunately quality infant care is very difficult to find. We have places in my city that has an infant waiting list a year+ long also. We've had our Ydd on a waiting list since she was born to get a spot in a specific preschool. Good luck with your search and stay vigilant in looking for quality child care.
  • I am in the same situation!! It's really frustrating and we are new to our current city and know almost no one. I've started asking the people/centers with long waiting lists for referrals. I've looked a little on care.com but the nanny taxes seem complicated. Sorry you're going through this.
  • My friend with twins ran into this. She ended up hiring a nanny to take care of them at home at first and then putting them in daycare when she got off the waiting list. Good luck.

  • We had this problem in our small town with our first too. She ended up commuting 30 miles to the bigger city of 100,000 just north of us every day for her first year. After, the first year, we were able to find a place to take her down the street from us. Not sure if that's an option for you?
  • This seems pretty common, unfortunately. Good infant care is hard to find. We lucked out with DD, and this LO will be going to the same center, but had we not have been so lucky, I would have been considering what some of the other PPs suggest. Nanny share? Does your hometown have a FB group? It is a great resource for non-licensed child care. Call the principal of the local elementary school. S/he might have some resources to share. Good luck and I hope you find a daycare solution you are happy with!

  • I would hire a nanny or do nanny share. What about an in home daycare?
  • I am completely feeling your pain. The problem I am running into is that I am a nurse with a rotating schedule. Bc I can't commit to certain days a week, I'll have to pay 1500$ per month for full time daycare that I don't need. And there is no way that kind of money is in my budget. I need to start looking at other options ASAP bc I have no idea what we are going to do. I am with you that my husband and I both have to work and don't have any family options available. I plan to look into home day care centers or someone to come to the house. I'm praying these are cheaper options. Best of luck!! :-/
