Anyone else have a painful back post epidural? I'm not sure if it's from the epidural itself or from curling up and pushing for 3 hours! I'm just curious how you all feel post epidural.
For the sake of not starting a new thread based on the same subject, I'll just ask here. I'm nearly 39 weeks and the plan is to get an epidural. I don't do well with pain, but if I know what to expect it helps me cope. I was wondering if anyone felt pain towards the end of labor while on an epidural? Like when you began pushing? My cousin was telling me her birth story/horror story and towards the end she felt herself tear. Just want to get a good idea of what to expect.
My first I had an epidural and I had a lot of soreness afterwords. It usually took me some time to stand up straight after changing his diaper.
@knottie16288692 I did have pain the entire time but only because I had a hot spot with my epidural. I told the nurses I needed to push and felt the stitches happening but it wasn't as full fledged pain as what it would have been otherwise.
I was in pain the first couple of days and I used a heating pad. Now 3 weeks pp I feel fine.
@Knottie16288692 I felt some pain the whole time because my epidural had to be replaced and redosed but my nurses were good at getting the anesthesiologist back in my room (and it was nothing like the original pain I was in). They even gave me another dose of the epidural before they stitched me up. And I also could feel and move my legs with no problem the whole time.

I think this is another place of everyone is different. I had very slight soreness at the injection site for a couple days, like a bruise.. .. The upper back and shoulders and everything is from pushing and is like typical exercise soreness. I felt absolutely nothing with mine until it wore off. It was a strange sensation but wonderful because it gave my body the rest it needed to be able to push effectively. Soreness came later down there but was very very manageable with motrin
I felt absolutely nothing with my epidural. However, it took nearly a year before the pain went away. I could not bend over to change a diaper. The baby had to be up high. If I laid her down on a low couch or bed, and bent over for any length of time, I was in extreme pain. 4 years later, and it's a lot better, but there are still things I'm incapable of doing without pain (like a traditional sponge mop)
Im still hella sore and stiff They said its because labor and delivery is basically like a hardcore workout. Plus I had previous back injuries but it was soo worth it.
@Knottie16288692 my real pain picked up at the end. But of course I progressed in minutes. I didnt feel anything, including my legs. I ripped but didn't feel that til everything wore off. I will say that the epidural made me incredibly itchy. Like uncontrollable. It only got better today and I delivered Sunday night

1-You should not feel pain after a day or two that is really pain. Sore is one thing. If more would ask your doc
2- knottie- you shouldn't feel pain at all with epidural. Like PP said you could have a hotspot that doesn't get numb I had a little spot on left side. But it was a bearable cramp where I could feel contractions. Still shouldn't be unbearable. If they give you epidural and can still feel something more than just in a little hot spot something is off. My whole left side wasn't getting numb so they had to take it out and redo it as if the needle is only slightly pointed in one direction could happen. I believe Bc I got epidural labor was not painful at all. And I had to push for 4 hours Bc she was face up. Just tired and frustrating. Only thing that hurt alittle was them pushing my stomach to deliver placenta.

Since I had lay on my side, I would feel the contractions on one side until I rolled over, but I felt no pain while pushing. The injection spot was very tender for a while but that's it
My epidural worked great. I was worried about the pain from getting the epidural but I was in so much pain from bacl labor pains at that point, the epidural was nothing. They did tell me with back labor that it is a possibility for it not to alleviate all of that pain because it could be due to the baby's head pushing on a nerve or her position, but it worked for me. I did have a hot spot like pp mentioned that started about an hour before I had to push. It was only in my right hip and I could feel when the contractions were coming due to it. I got my epidural around 3:30 that afternoon and she was born at 12:28 the next morning. I was worried about it wearing off, but it didn't and I didnt even know the doctor was doing stitches until I saw it...i didn't feel it.
@Knottie16288692 My epidural only worked when it was first given. However it wore off after 4 hours and then only my right side was slightly numb. Initially it was tipped to the right. They repositioned it and it was no better. They gave me 2 top ups and tried a different solution but still nothing. They continued to use the cold ice trick to verify where i was frozen. The only place that was numb (mostly) was my "outer" vagina. I felt pain the entire labour but didnt feel my tearing.
I recommend getting an epidural before contractions are really close! I waited until 7 cm and they had a really hard time getting my epidural because I was so tense and crying. It took 3 tries and only worked on one side! The back pain was miserable for about a week. Like most others, not sure if that's from the epidural or labor itself.
I didn't have any trouble with my epi with pain afterwards....but it did. Not. Work. At. All. They tried adjusting it a couple times. I ended up having general for emergency csection after 3 hrs of pushing. I think I'm an oddity though. Hoping the spinal block this time works better!
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because not only did my epi work completely but I had no pain or soreness afterwards. I had them place it right before starting pitocin so maybe that helped the anesthesiologist do a better job since I was only having mild contractions and could be extra still. I started with a walking dose which was great to avoid the bladder catheter and hen converted to the full dose when I was at 9 cm.
Oh everytime someone asks me about my labor I tell them how amazing the epidural was. Mine worked completely. Didn't have it til I was 6cm and had so much pain (I was having contractions every 1-2 minutes for a couple hours before I hit 6cm). It took a few minutes for the epidural to kick in but once it did I didn't feel any contractions, and they had to tell me when to push. I had minor back pain a few days after but it was nothing really.
Edit- reading other people's comments I was able to stay still even though I was contracting so often. My anesthesiologist did it fairly quickly and seemed to really knew what he was doing. It was more towards my left side but they had me lie on my side for an hour and then switch sides. Said the epidural went with gravity. If didn't switch sides then one side would be more numb and the other side would wear off. Everyone is different though.
