*sighs* It worries me ALOT!

  • Did they say why? Normally it is just high bilirubin levels from liver not fully developed to breakdown, and goes away with time or the lights.

  • Sorry to hear you and baby are dealing with this. Were there signs of jaundice at the hospital before you and baby were discharged?
Hope they are able to treat little man and get him healthy!!

  • DS was treated in the hospital for high bilirubin levels (19?) at 4 days old. It broke my heart not to be able to pick him up. He cried so much and tried to tear the goggles off. I cried the whole time, too. I feel for you and hope everything comes out ok! Let us know what happens!

  • Thank you! They went up to 16 & we had to stay another night...I cried too. && it went down to 10...retested Sat and up to 13...Hoping it is better...I hate them pricking his little helpless self...:(
Next thing is his ultrasound for his kidney... It's dialated but we were told it'd go away... Everything worries me... :(
  • Watching baby get pricked is AWFUL. I'm still scarred from those memories. The good thing is that 13 is not danger territory, even though it's higher than normal, and you are obviously getting him checked often. If they say the kidney dilation will go away, then hold onto that hope! I was so confused as to how my pediatrician and our caregivers in the hospital were SO calm about high bilirubin levels. In hindsight, they knew it was a common issue with good treatments.

Did you discover the high levels before leaving the hospital? Or did you get home first?

  • At the hospital... He was 11.5 for three days and then jumped up to 16.5... Omg I cried ao hard seeing him under the lamp! Then the Peditrician recommended to see PCP and we got tested the day after, it went to 13! I've been breastfeeding him, counting dirty diapers, hoping it'll all resolve thru the dirty diapers, which he has been doing great!

Yes hoping for good news about his kidney, they say it's normal for boys bc of the progesterone horomones and 90% it's gonna resolve but for me it seemed like one thing after another and it's our first LO too...

I was in the hospital from Sun-Fri but I am keeping the faith && being strong! Everything is for the best for him!
  • Something my midwife has told me with both kiddos is to find a window with good, direct sunlight and strip baby down for 10-15min twice a day! I haven't ever had to use the lights for my kiddos. It works!
  • We were in the same boat. We left the hospital a day later than normal because LOs level was at 13. Then it went to 20.3 after a few days at home. She looked like a lemon one day. I couldn't stop crying. The doctor had me stop breastfeeding and switch to pumping so I could mix the milk with nursery water and she had to have the glow light on her for 5 days. But we got the call yesterday her levels were back down to 11! It's a very scary feeling going through all of this. Hang in there!
  • I remember DD going through this. She had to go back into the hospital because of her bilirubin levels. It was heartbreaking to see her under the light, and being unable to hold her and soothe her like I wanted. I cried so much. The thing you have to remember is that your LO is in great hands and will be just fine. This is a very common situation and you are not alone. When I was sitting there watching her, my mother brought me pictures of myself as a baby, under a light too. She just kept reminding me that if I made it through that DD could too. She kept saying 'And just look at you now. You are such a strong woman!' So as some encouragement, I've included below a pic of DD when she was under the light, and a shot of her happy and healthy on her 2nd birthday (from last week). I hope these pictures help you as much as the pictures helped me while I was in your place. You and LO will make it through!

Unfortunately this doesn't alway work, especially with babies with levels as high as the op mentioned her lo has.

OP, I'm sorry you're going through this. My LO is 7 days old and we are currently going through the exact same thing. Levels were 11.4 when we left the hospital and we had them rechecked each day at the doctor's office and use a bili blanket and window at home. By the time she was 4 days old her levels got to 19.7 and she had to spend 2 days in the NICU. We're home now and go back today to recheck. It's heartbreaking to see them in the hospital but I just remind myself it's what she needs and will make her better. Stay strong!
  • Thanks everyone! Trying to feed him and make sure he poops as much as possible... Just so stressful when they prick his little feet & him crying breaks my heart!
