Best brand/type of a prenatal vitamin

edited October 2015 in June 2016 Moms
Hi! I am almost 6 weeks. So I don't have my first appointment yet for a another few weeks. I know I need to be taking a prenatal. As a first time mom I'm not really sure the best brand out there. I bought vita fusion prenatal gummies (easier for me to get down) but stopped taking them. I try do research online because everything (no matter what brand) has something negative about it and I get freaked out! Please help!

  • I take over the counter vitaflo ultra and really like it. I always felt nauseous after vitamins but there are great. A bit expensive $30 each month
  • The one that you can stomach and remember to take every day. Seriously just grab one and take it. If your doctor feels like you need more of something in particular he'll have you add on a separate supplement. I take additional folic since I have Celiac and don't receive any folic in my grains (cereal, bread, etc...).

  • I was taking the gummies until the OBGYN nurse told me I needed iron which my gummies didn't have. Has anyone been taking an iron supplement with the gummies?
  • Is it okay to switch prenatals in mid pregnancy. I think I want to switch to chewy ones. I'm having the hardest time getting my one a days down.

I've done a LOT of research and as a soon to be mama of 4, with my littlest only 6 months old lol, I still have some leftover Rainbow Light and I supplement an additional DHA plus B6 for morning sickness. These are my favorite! Noticeably added energy and help the constipation issue ;)
  • Melaleuca prenatal
  • I do the naturemade multi with DHA for the first tri because I have iron deficiency so I need the extra iron, but I switched to gummies halfway through last time and made sure I had enough iron in my diet. The trick with iron is to take it a half hour after you eat, and don't eat for an hour or two after you take it. Too soon before or after eating will most likely make you sick.

  • My Ob recommended Thorne Basic Prenatal (Amazon has it and also emersonecologics.com)

It's three pills a day, but I can take it without food and absolutely no nausea. And I struggle with nausea even before pregnancy.

  • I got my Garden of Life prenatals at a local health food store. I bet you could find them at Whole Foods. You can also get them on Amazon for a decent price. They are a 3/a day but I've just been taking one in the morning and two at night. My doc. said that was okay, you should ask your doctor if you want to do that though. The only reason I chose them over the Rainbow Light prenatals is that I have an MTHFR genetic mutation, which means I need to make sure I get folate, not folic acid in my prenatal.

  • Where do you purchase the RAW  garden of life prenatals?
AMAZON.  I love them! Usually much cheaper on Amazon.  I've had awful all day MS and I can stomach the x3 day no problem on an empty stomach.  They are easy to swallow.
  • Thanks, just checked on Amazon, ordering now!

  • Herbalife multivitamins is what I take. 3 xs a day, but they are all natural and water soluble. I also take just a basic folic acid supplement once a day
  • I've been taking naturemade prenatals along with a separate fish oil pill for DHA because I'm not a fan of fish. I also take a chewable calcium+vitd supplement because my vitamin d was crazy low for awhile and the naturemade prenatals are a little low on calcium. The naturemade ones aren't massive like some I've seen, just need to remember to take them after (not before or with, take them after) food or else the huge amount of iron in them can upset your stomach. I puked more than once on my journey to figuring that one out.
  • Garden of Life Raw Prenatal. I also take DHA and calcium at the recommendation of my doctor. It took me a good 10 minutes of comparing bottles at the grocery store (Sprouts) to not put me too too high on vitamin D. I need extra vitamin D, but more than 2000 IU daily seemed like overkill.

  • I take the Nature Made Prenatal Multi + DHA. I take it right before I go to sleep. Thankfully haven't had any negative side effects. My ob strongly recommends to take vitamins before bed to minimize the chance of nausea.

My last pregnancy I took the slow release iron pills with the gummy vitamins.
  • I take Seeking Health's prenatal vitamin. I'm homozygous MTHFR, so I need L-methylfolate, the active form of folate. My body can't access folic acid. Folic acid has even been linked to increased risk of cancer. I also take DHA and a slow release iron supplement, both picked up from my local health store.
  • I bought some Similac Prenatal Vitamins today, gonna take those w a calcium supplement! Anyone heard anything about this brand? I figure since they make baby formula, these have to be pretty good, right????
  • Most people have a strong opinion on their prenatal and what they think is the best.... I'm no different :)
I use Designs for Health prenatal pro packets. My ND prescribed it, it has everything I need AND it has folate, not folic acid. I don't have any health conditions but folic acid just isn't good for you like folate is.
I haven't had any issues with it making me nauseous except for when I take it on an empty stomach.
  • The vitafusion gummies are so good! They're like candy, I love to eat mine too! And my friend who is a neuroscientist recommended them so I assume they're good too.
  • I'm in the UK and ive been taking pregnacare by vitabiotics since ttc. It's a 1 a day from tesco by 2 get 1 free (75 in a box) 19 vitamins and minerals.
  • I've been doing the Rainbow Lite prenatals. They've been amazing for me so far. However, to be fair, I'm a bit of a special population. I have IC and most multivitamins (and prenatals) make my bladder hurt and have me in the bathroom every 15 minutes all day. I've actually been able to take the Rainbow Lite prenatals with only a very mild increase in urinary frequency and no bladder pain so far. They're definitely worth trying if anyone else has IC. Bonus: I don't throw them up 90% of the time like the multivitamins I used to take back before I developed IC years ago.

I'm not 100% sure the Rainbow Lite prenatals are what I would have picked if I wasn't trying to account for IC also though.
