Bad Cold :( Worried

Hey everyone! Hope you're all feeling happy and healthy :)
Yesterday I turned 15 weeks but instead of feeling happy and excited, I'm feeling worried and so sick. Caught a nasty cold over the weekend, and obviously it's taking me longer to get better as I'm not taking any medication. Started off as just a bad cold with sleepless nights and ongoing headache but now I've started to throw up too. I don't have a fever so I don't believe it's a flu which I understand can become quite serious for pregnant women but I just don't know how to become better. Worried something will happen to my baby. Can anyone offer any advice or personal experiences? Thank you in advance :( xx

No experience with this. But if it were me, I would call my doctor.

  • I suffered through a cold probably around 13-14 weeks in August and I suffered through it. I don't like taking any medicine now that I'm pregnant just because I would rather not. It definitely took longer to get better. Your baby is fine, just your immune system is weakened while pregnant, so we are more prone to colds, flu, etc. I honestly tried to stay hydrated, get rest when I could and that was it. My throat was scratchy so I drank a lot of warm water with honey or gargled salt water too in the morning. It made it feel better as in subsiding the scratchiness.

  • Call your doctor...there are things you can take, and if it eventually becomes a upper respiratory infection or sinus infection it is wise to take antibiotics to treat it.  I suffered through one terrible cold in the late first tri and wound up on antibiotics for a sinus infection.  As soon as I started getting a second cold (I spiked a fever that I treated with Tylenol), I went to the doctor the next day, and she gave me a Z-pack, which I believe helped to decrease the duration of the cold and stop it from becoming a full fledged infection.  I very rarely get colds...the decreased immunity during pregnancy is no joke.

If you spike a fever take Tylenol (not Advil) and monitor it for a few hours.  If it goes down to normal after the Tylenol you're probably fine, but if it stays elevated go to Urgent Care ASAP.  It is not good for you to have a fever while pregnant.

  • In my experience, you don't usually throw up when you have a cold. That's usually some kind of viral/flu/etc. I would call my doctor.

colds are miserable while pregnant, but as long as you don't have a high, sustained temp you should be ok. Fetuses are rugged little buggers. Just think if every woman miscarried with a cold-- we wouldn't have the population on this earth in the billions. Its natural to worry, but temper your worry with the fact that it would take a very awful lot for this cold to jeopardize your pregnancy.

What helped me was steamy shower rooms, vicks vapor rub on the bottom of my feet with socks and hot water. Keep hydrated and ride it out. I know it sucks-- but the common cold should be done in a week or two.

  • I'm down with a cold as well. I called my OB today and she said I could take Sudafed for congestion and Robitissum for cough if needed. Of course I'm trying to avoid any meds but at some points I need relief! Give your OB a call.
