3rd Trimester

Breasts tingling. Milk coming in?

I'm at 27weeks 3 days 3rd pregnancy. The last 2 days I have had that feeling my milk is letting down 2 or 3 times a day. Anyone have that and then the onset of labor? I'm just wondering if their could be any correlation? I'm so ready to have my baby.

  • I totally typo'd that. I'm 37 weeks!
  • While this is my 3rd I was induced with the other 2 and never had anything like this. I was just hoping for someone to say yeah! I did that too and went into labor the following week....

Sorry for the typo! I should have rechecked and checked again.

Also your milk won't come in until 3-5 days after baby is born. Until then, you produce colostrum.

Still not full term. You have at least 3 weeks to even wish for labor. Hang in there, but its too soon to wish for labor yet.

  • Your milk won't come in until the placenta separates itself from the wall of the uterus.  That separation is what tells your body to work on making milk instead of colostrum, and it takes a few days for that to actually happen.  So no, it's not possible that your milk has come in yet, because if your baby is still inside of you the placenta is still attached to the uterus.  You can leak colostrum and feel phantom letdown, but that's about it.

actually, 37 weeks is considered full term. However, making it to 39 weeks is best for baby and baby's development. I am currently 37 weeks (38 tomorrow), and my docs have told me since week 37 if she comes at any time now it is safe.

I have been having the tingling also, but can't say whether it's related to labor or not--been having contractions for 4 days now.
  • I am 33 w 5 d with my second and have been having the let down tingle a little yesterday and today and wondering the same thing. I know a have a good amount of time yet before baby comes but still makes me wonder. I never felt this with my first that I remember anyway.

Again this is phantom letdown. It's not really your milk coming in. The reason you didn't feel it with your first pregnancy is that you didn't know what letdown felt like before you breastfed. It is not physically possible for your milk to come in until the placenta detaches from the uterine wall, and if that has happened, your pregnancy is in serious jeopardy. That doesn't happen until the baby is outside of you. You should be making small amounts of colostrum now, but not milk.

And this means nothing as far as when labor will start.
  • yep it could be your milk, but let your LO enjoy the time in there is much as possible :)
  • Yes I know my milk isn't in. All I said was I've gotten the let down feeling. It just surprised me to feel that. And yes I want baby to cook as long as possible
  • I don't suppose anyone can explain to a FTM what the difference is between milk coming in and letting down?

Your milk should come in between 3-5 days after delivering (before your milk comes in, you produce colostrum). A let down is a reflex that occurres when you're nursing/pumping, when you're too full, or can randomly happen. Some women feel it, others don't.

If you live in the U.S., 37 weeks is no longer considered full-term due to higher risk of complications for babies born between 37 and 38 weeks.  Full-term in the U.S. is now 39 weeks, though other areas do still consider 37 weeks full-term.
