Early Symptoms of Preeclampsia

Hey everyone...so I am 13w1d with my and my husbands second child (first is 4 months old)! This is exciting because we were told it would be extremely hard to have a child...let alone two! Anyways, with my son I ended up being diagnosed with preeclampsia at 31 weeks and had an emergency csection at 32...I am starting to recognize some of the same symptoms again! Is it to early to have/be diagnosed with it again? Anyone else have this? I should mention that I do have pcos. Thanks!

Yes, it is too early. Have you been to your OB yet? Need to keep an eye on your BP and urinary protein for sure, especially if you are feeling unwell.

  • I had preeclampsia with my last pregnancy as well - I went on bed rest at 34 weeks, the day my BP (while on BP meds) was 180/116 - this was after a few weeks of my BP being 160's/90's.

There is a combination of baby aspirin and B12 that you can take to help prevent, but it's not proven (according to my OB) so I am not going that route.  My BP is already up, so I am on 100mg Labetalol twice a day and being checked every 1-2 weeks (in fact, I am going in this afternoon for a BP check).

Watch for headaches, swelling, firework lights in your eyes.  Your OB will watch for high BP and protein in your urine and run labs if you are showing signs.

  • Idk if its to early to be diagnosed but with my first pregnancy i had all the symptoms of preeclampsia, high bp, extreme swelling, etc but never had high protein in urine so was never diagnosed with it. For me it started around 16 weeks and just got worse the further along i got.

  • I'm a lurker from A15, but this is something near & dear to my heart. According to preeclampsia.org it can occur at any point during pregnancy. With your history I'd be running to the doctor.

My cousin had pre-eclampsia turned full blown HELLP by 22 weeks. The initial symptoms (puffiness & generally feeling off) were over looked when I'm guessing she was around 18ish weeks. They tried to get her to 24 weeks but were unable. While we'll never know if early intervention would have made a difference, I can't help but wonder.

I wish you all the best!

In this case, it is still a hypertensive complication of pregnancy even though you didn't have full-blown pre-eclampsia (thankfully).
  • Same here. I had PIH starting at 20 weeks during my last pregnancy. I developed full blown HELLP after I delivered via csection at 37w. I'm now 13w 1d and started to feel the PIH symptoms again but maybe it's just paranoia because I had my bp checked 3x and all was normal :/
  • Thanks everyone. Contacted my doctor this morning and her nurse told me I just needed to drink more water. I'm just worried that everything that happened yesterday (super light headed, extremely hot with cold sweats, shaking, feeling jittery) is more than dehydration...something just feels so off...thanks again for the advice I feel more secure in my nervousness...
  • With my first I had a home bp cuff. I took it my bp every 2-3 hours but I wouldn't suggest doing it that often but maybe even stop into a pharmacy and relax and take your bp.

Yeah thats what the doctor said at my first appt. He also said that it is unlikely i will have it again this time around. Hopefully he's right because i did not enjoy it at all! He had to give me a water pill after delivery once i was back home and i lost 20 lbs in 24 hrs. I peed more in the 24 hrs than i did in the 1st trimester.

  • I've never had preeclampsia before but I was already diagnosed with hypertension before I became pregnant. I had to do the 24 hour urine specimen to get a baseline and they did ask that I take the low dose aspirin in addition to my labetalol which I take twice a day. My 24 hour urine was normal and so far my blood pressure is normal with the use of medication. I get my blood pressure monitored just about every other week so they are keeping a close eye on me.

@tmarrie87 it's worrisome what your nurse said that you need to just drink more water. If I got a response like that I would insist for the Dr. to call me back or speak to someone else.

  • This is very near and dear to my heart. My son was born at 28 weeks due to severe pre-eclampsia. Since then, I did lost weight, but am having trouble keeping anything down so I end up eating salty items. Trying to stay hydrated, and also taking the aspirin and will start on the vitamin B. Naturally, my Dad made me drink garlic tea when i was in the hospital and my blood pressure still didn't go down. It helped bring it down so I plan on drinking that a lot starting at 5 months. Thus far, my blood pressure is great. Going to visit a specialist at the beginning of next month. Will keep you all posted on what they tell me.
  • I had it with my son but it was towards the end and I was induced at 38 weeks. This time I have been trying to stay very active. So far my blood pressure has been good at every appointment. Hope it stays that way.
Do you have a portable blood pressure machine? If you have one, you should probably check it throughout the day and call your doctor asap if its in the danger zones.

I would just like to point out that as of about 8 months ago, per ACOG and AWHONN, proteinuria is no longer considered in the diagnostics for pre-eclampsia, because many preeclampsic women present without it and it was leading to missed diagnosis.
  • My doctor prescribed me a low dose of aspirin (75 mg daily) to take during my second trimester - there have been studies conducted and published on this which shows it can help reduce the likelihood of preeclampsia developing. I don't have any links but they are easy to find if you google it. Take care.

Just throwing this out there. I had those same symptoms (also pcos/ high blood pressure) and was so lightheaded and dizzy that I couldn't walk without crashing into something. Immediately went to the OB because I also thought it was preeclampsia, but she said it wasn't. However, just to be safe, she sent me to my GP for a second opinion: it was a sinus infection. They told me to take Benadryl and affrin and within 20 minutes the lightheaded was was gone (I had been unable to walk for 48 hours by that point).
