Thoughts on evening primrose oil?

I've been doing some research on evening primrose oil, and from what I've read, it has some great benefits for labor and delivery. I've read that it reduces tearing during labor for almost everyone that has taken it. This seems like a huge plus to me. It can also be used (after squeezed from the capsule) to help perform perineum massages during the weeks leading up to labor. I know a lot of women take it to help soften their cervix to assist in the process of going into labor. I'm not questioning taking it so I can hurry my labor up, or to have my baby before she is ready to come out (I understand every body is different), but I think the fact that it helps in reducing tearing and with effacement and dilation prior to birth seems pretty awesome. What is everyone's thoughts/experiences on taking EPO a few weeks before your due date?

Re: Thoughts on evening primrose oil?

  • My doula recommends it. My OB said she didn't have anything against it but didn't think it helped much. I'm going to give it a shot once I get to 36 weeks. I haven't read much of a downside.

  • Tried it with DD, it did nothing. Took it orally and inserted, I did not dilate one iota until my water broke and I had 2 2nd degree tears so I would say do it if you want but it's not some magic cure
