Induction

I'm due on Nov. 4 and my husband's appointment for his vasectomy is on Oct. 30. He only has 5 days vacation left and because we have a high deductible we don't want to wait til next year to have his vasectomy done. We're thinking of talking to my doctor about inducing labor on Nov. 2 (if I don't give birth before that) so my husband doesn't have to schedule an emergency vacation or get a point for leaving work early if I go into labor while he's at work. I read that there's a high chance of c-section with labor induction. Can moms who had labor induction share their experience so we can think more about this before talking to our doctor? Thanks! :)

Re: Induction

  • I was one of the moms who was induced with my DD and ended up with an emergency c-seciton. If I had the choice, I would definitely wait and try to go naturally, induction was painful for me. (But I'm a wimp ;) ) Wishing you the best!!

  • If you have Netflix you should watch "The Business of Being Born"
The way they explained how inductions lead to C-sections helped make sense of everything for me. I've seen a lot of cases on this BMB of inductions that didn't lead to c-sections though. I'm a FTM in the fact that this will be my first baby to bring home, but I had a loss at 38 weeks where I had to be induced. It was a successful vaginal induction. I had pitocin and an epidural, which are the two things that are often blamed for inductions leading to c-sections.
  • Most doctors won't do induction for convenience. I know mine won't. They won't talk induction unless medically needed or you are over 40 weeks. Be prepared for them to say no. I was 1 day shy of 41 weeks when they set up induction for DD2. I luckily went into labor that night on my own.
  • Been induced twice due to preeclampsia (I am one of the ones who's already had their baby) and have delivered naturally both times. I don't think your doctor will induce, unless medically necessary. But haven't had a c-section; hope this helps!
  • My joke of an OB will deliver at 39 weeks. It depends on your OB's practice honestly. Some are willing to go before and some aren't. It's a discussion worth having with your doctor. Personally I wouldn't want to induce in your shoes unless my body was showing signs of being almost ready beforehand since it isn't medically necessary, but that's just me. I'd rather my boyfriend get a slap on the wrist at work (how much trouble can he really get in if he's a good employee if it's due to his child being born? Seriously?) than induce in your situation. There is a link between inducing and c-sections although I don't remember all the research on it. The Business of Being Born is great, just take it with a grain of salt because they are pushing a POV in it.

You know your family's situation though, but either way this is a discussion for you, your hubs, and your doctor.
  • Thanks for your insights. I'm really hoping to give birth before the end of the month. I have GD and I have been having braxton hicks since 28 weeks. My husband and I will talk about this. Thanks again. :)
  • My husband's workplace's management is horrible! They are on mandatory 7 days work until further notice. And when I fell down our stairs and I and the hospital called him because I didn't want the hospital to send an ambulance to my house, he got a point even though he went back to work after making sure I was fine. If he gets two more points, he will have an unsatisfactory review and won't get his Christmas bonus. We are relying on that to pay some of the hospital bills. My plan is just to call my in-laws when I go into labor so they can take me to the hospital and we'll just tell my husband to go to the hospital after work. But my husband doesn't like that idea.
  • I'm a FTM so I don't have any personal experience to give to you, but we have been considering induction as well. I never thought that I would be, and if it wasn't under our circumstance I wouldn't be at all. I'm all for having my little guy cook as long as he wants and come on his own. I've watched the videos someone had suggested you watch on Netflix, and it's definitely knowledgeable information and really changed my outlook on pregnant and giving birth. But my husband is in the military and his contract is up 2 days after my due date. Which for me means insurance is dropping me that day. And its really been a struggle for us to decide what is the 'right' thing to do, so my suggestion for you is to just do what is best for you and your family. I'm getting induced at 39 weeks, and my dr actually was supportive because of our situation and he's mentioned it wasn't that uncommon actually.
