How do strollers work if you're not buying a car seat?!

Hey Moms and Moms-to-be!

I’m getting really overwhelmed with strollers and don’t understand how babies work (first time mom here…). My hubby and I registered for a stroller / car seat combo. We didn’t receive it as a gift and just found out that the hospital we’re delivering at (TGH!) gives parents a free infant car seat as a gift. Initially I thought this was awesome but now I’m confused on how the stroller part of scenario works.

If you buy your car seat separate from your stroller than what stroller do you use while the baby is still an infant and too tiny to sit-up in a stroller? I just don’t understand how this baby stuff works and am trying to be conservative with what we purchase for our little man.

Can you find out the brand that your hospital provides? If so, then you should be able to determine which strollers are compatible with that car seat and still go out and purchase a normal stroller. If they're giving out a car seat to everyone I'm sure it's one that is compatible with a lot of different strollers.

  • If you can, find out the brand and model of the car seat the hospital provides. From there you can look at strollers in the same brand that will work with it or other brand that are either compatible or can be made compatible with an adapter kit. This is also assuming it's an infant car seat that they're providing.

Other wise there are strollers with bassinets or bassinet attachments that might work, or you can get by until baby is old enough for a stroller by baby wearing or carrying the infant seat.

Depending on the infant car seat you can purchase what's called a "snap & go" stroller. Baby trend makes a "universal" one that works with most infant carriers - here's a link

ETA: sells on Amazon for about $64
  • Unfortunately, for the moms who like to plan ahead, they don't have one set brand of car seat so we have to wait and see what's "in stock" on discharge day.
  • Just a thought, but its what we plan to do for our guy...we have 2 vehicles, so for one, we've already purchased a Travel Set, thanks to amazon warehouse deals, and them saying the box was damaged, we got ot for 150$ instead of 270$. Our hospital does a free carseat as well, and we plan to just put that in the other vehicle for short trips, as thats all that car is used for. We figure for the trips made with that vehicle he'll more than likely just get carried anyway.

I know this scenario doesnt match everyones lifestyle, but its a thought atleast...

No advice but that is amazing your hospital provides car seats!!

I cannot agree more! Ours doesnt provide anything - you even have to take your own receiving blanket!

  • Some strollers have a bassinet option that you can use without the car seat. I know mine does uppababy vista. You put the baby right in there because it lays flat
  • There are also some universal strollers out there!!' But don't fret!! You probably won't be feeling up to a stroll within the first few days so maybe just wait until you know and but accordingly?
  • Keeping the babe in a car seat isn't a must.  Most strollers recline back to at least a 45 degree angle for little ones or sleeping older babies.  That along with the belts and blankets should keep a newborn snug in any stroller.

Yes but then your stuck transferring a sleeping baby to and from the car seat to the stroller. Not ideal.

  • I already bought my carseat, but I may actually wait until after the baby is born to buy a stroller, it isn't like December weather makes for great walking. A stroller can be shipped by the time you are a 7-10 days postpartum and starting to feel better. We did buy a carrier if we need something for before we get our stroller(s).
  • I was going to suggest PP^^ said! Wait until you get your car seat. You could go to babies r us and look at different ones, and then make your decision after you get home!!
