3rd Trimester

Ok to fly at 33 weeks?

My mom lives in NC and I live in NY. The flight including layover is 4 hours. Is it okay to fly at 33 weeks? My step dad bought the ticket for me as a surprise so I can actually surprise my mom. I haven't seen her in over a year. What are your thoughts?

  • My midwives have said I will need to stop travel at 34 weeks. So, technically, 33 would still be OK for me. And I believe my work plans to take fuuuull advantage of that. ha!

  • My OB said no traveling more than 1 hr away from the hospital after 34 weeks. Definitely talk to your doctor.
  • Thank you all for the input! I'm calling my doctor today, he was closed over the weekend. Unfortunatly they don't refund tickets so that's an issue but I could always postpone it if he says no.
  • Most airlines will let you fly to 36 weeks, but you may want to check with your specific airline.  Also, I'd see if you can get a note from your OB stating how many weeks you are, just in case the airline decides to get fussy about it.

  • Definitely ask your OB, they know your medical history and are equipped to weight the pros/cons of 3rd tri travel.

This. I flew from NC to NJ for my shower at 32 weeks and it was fine. I didn't get super uncomfortable until around 35-36 weeks.
  • Throwing in another vote for asking your OB, though I will say that mine gave a green light for travel up until the last month.
  • I'm 32w 2d and just got back from a long weekend trip. She's fine and I'm fine. It wasn't bad at all. Just swollen feet and hands.
