1st Trimester

Beta numbers help?

Bear with me please, my doctor has released a monster by giving me too much information.  So I got my first beta numbers back today, at my estimated 4w0d on the 16th, I was just over 200 mIU/ml.  Now assuming betas double every 48 hours, that would put me at 100 on the 14th, 50 on the 12th, 25 on the 10th, etc.  I had the squinterist of squinters on the 12th on a wondfo (when I should have been at 50) and a faint but clear line on a FRER on the 13th.  Anyone care to explain more about HcG that makes this all make sense?

Also, I am going back for a second draw to check that levels are rising properly, just was curious as to what was going on assuming that betas double every 48 hours.

Re: Beta numbers help?

  • Because they don't always double.  Sometimes they triple, or more.  Also, some wondfos are crap.  I got a bfn when, working backwards from later betas, I should have been at a 25.

Okay, so they're supposed to AT LEAST double then?  That makes a lot more sense.  I know when I ovulated (was charting bbt) so there is only so far along that I could possibly be and was confused when I heard how high the beta was.  I went in expecting to be somewhere around 60 tops so to be nearly 3 times that was a bit disconcerting.
  • Hcg levels differ so much from person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy.
It should double (or more than double) every 48-72 hours. As long as it's steadily climbing, that's a good sign.
I wouldn't put too much stock into the numbers at this point. As long as your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either. I think sometimes too much knowledge is a bad thing and can make us over analyze things.
Just sit back and wait for your next draw, and see what the numbers are and what the doctor says. Also, if your number is higher than double, it does not mean there is a problem or that there is more than one in there.
I know it's hard to not think constantly about everything, but try to take a deep breath and relax.

I am such an over analyzer it's ridiculous (hence the comment about the doc releasing a monster with giving me the numbers).  My HcG is at the dead center of the range for 4w0d and they didn't seem concerned, just wanted to have me come in for a redraw to make sure that the HcG is going up at the right pace.  This waiting nonsense is so difficult.....
