Sleep Troubles... Help!

My LO is 4 weeks old and she is having the hardest time going to sleep at night. I know that she is still very young and can't go with a schedule or anything but I tried starting earlier with feeding, then rocking her to sleep so I'm not going to bed super late but it takes her between 1-3 hours to go to sleep and stay asleep. Once I put her down she wakes up. It's not realistic for me to have to walk around the house for 3 hours to put her asleep. Any advice for getting baby asleep and to stay asleep?

Re: Sleep Troubles... Help!

  • We feed him an extra ounce so he's milk sleepy and it helps a lot. Some nights we do the walking and singing routine. I set up our bedroom, so it's always dimly lit and I'll play some Nora Jones to soothe him. Other nights I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't figured out one trick that always works, except to hand him to dad so I can pass out because I do all the night feeding.

  • The lavender baby lotion and soap work great for my daughter. She sleeps for like 6 hours after that.
  • What time are you trying to put her to bed? How long is she up before bedtime?  Are you putting her down right when she "falls asleep" only to have her wake again and then having to start over? Try waiting longer before you set her down if you are, an extra 20 minutes after she is sleeping is nothing compared with having to repeat the whole cycle 3 or 4 times.  Is she swaddled? White noise? These things are guaranteed but they at least help in most cases.

Typically newborn bedtimes tend to be a bit later between 9 and 11 pm, if you are trying to do bedtime much earlier than that you may have a problem.  Where is she sleeping? Can you warm her bed with a heating pad before you lay her down or a warm water bottle so that the temperature change isn't that jarring? You can also try putting a t-shirt that you wore in her bed so that it smells like you.  If you are putting her in a crib try laying her closer to one side or in the corner so it doesn't feel so large and open.

The best things you can do are try to mimic the environment in the womb.  When DS was about that age I would Youtube womb sounds on my phone and put it in his pack n play with him for about an hour which seemed to help.  All that said sometimes sleep can be really tough and every baby is different.  Could she possibly be hungry still? DS2 always clusters feeds right before bed so he needs to eat way more than usual in order to stay asleep.
  • I know this isn't what u wanna hear but our 5 week old baby has slept 9 hours the last 3 nights! To help u i can tell u what we do. I try my hardest to keep her up and stimulated after 5pm (not always possible!). She has a bath between 7-8pm. She is breastfed and i always give her a bottle as a top up before bed. I always aim to take her up to bed around 9pm to a dinmed lit room. And i do minimal talking to her or talk to her in a soothing voice. Hope some of these tips help. All babys are different though xx
  • My baby does that right before her growth spurts. She usually goes down like a champ during the day and often enough at night. But there's something extra exciting about 5:30pm-8:30pm. Mine is almost 6 weeks old.

  • DS does that, I try to put him to sleep after 11p and he will fuss til 1a or 2a. I end up cluster feeding in 1 oz increments til he is out. But that sleep cycle is no more than 3 hrs if any.

  • When our LO is overtired it takes much longer to rock her to sleep and stay asleep longer than 10 minutes...which can take us 1-2 hours. How long is your LO awake for before bedtime?
