2nd Trimester

Migraines and morning sickness

I will be 15 weeks on monday and recently started getting migraines that last for days. I was diagnosed with them when I was in high school and was prescribed medication for them, which isn't safe during pregnancy. I have noticed that when start getting them now, I get sick within about 20 minutes of it starting. My first trimester I ended up in the emergency room a few times for getting dehydrated from vomiting for hours, and I have lost over 30 pounds due to it. I've been taking Tylenol to the best of my stomachs ability to try and help my migraines, but even sipping water during them makes me sick....

Does anyone have any advise on what to do?? I've tried everything my doctor has suggested, and my husband is at a loss of how to help.

  • I miss my topomax, so I feel your pain. I've found that laying down with an ice pack/cool cloth and taking a nap helps a bit, but it's not always practical.
A combo of something sugary and salty can help too (If you can keep it down.. Like crackers and juice).

I've heard some people still take imitrex.. I was never able to stomach it.. But there are some prescription meds you can still take. It may help to talk to a neurologist rather than your OB.

  • My friends keep telling me I'm sleeping too much, but it's either so I don't get sick or to help my headache. My husband doesn't care as long as he knows if something is wrong so he can tell his command. (On submarines). I will try icepacks since cold cloths haven't seemed to be helping a whole lot.

Talking to a neurologist is a good idea, I didn't even think about it, but they would be better to ask about what I can do to help since my ob is kind of at a loss :(

  • My OB okay'd me to take my Maxalt as needed. It's prescription, melts in your mouth and it knocks the migraine out in 15 minutes. I've only needed it twice in my pregnancy but I'd check to see if it's an option for you. I was also taking Topamax as my daily maintenance med but stopped before ttc. I wonder sometimes if the people using oils and stuff are truly having a migraine. When a real one comes oil is the last thing I'm interested in. Good luck!
  • I can't help much with the morning sickness, I just ate saltine crackers or plain bagels (with nothing on it) and drank sprite.

For headaches and migraines I suffered through without taking medicine except I love peppermint oil, best thing ever while I had the headaches. I am prone to headaches and migraines, I try and sleep when I can and load up on the peppermint oil and it helped me a ton.
