Overwhelmed by all the STUFF

We were gifted from a friend a lot of baby stuff
a jogging stroller
A regular stroller
2 breast pumps
Swing
Co-sleeper pack and play
Bouncer
Bath seat
Sink flower
Baby Clothes and shoes
Bibs and burp cloths and hooded towels and wash cloths
A jumper
Car seat bases that go with our car seat.
Diaper bags
Cloth diaper liners
Glass bottles
And I am freaking out....... There is so much stuff. I am so greatful and I can't believe that I don't have to get these things and I don't need to register for them either. I was feeling so prepared for this baby I was optimistic and told my H that we would be able to handle it but now I am freaking out where am I going to put this stuff and what about all the other stuff this kid needs. I mean I have 2 Dds already that are older I forgot about all the extras any advice on how I can not freak out about it because I'm starting to loose my mind.

Re: Overwhelmed by all the STUFF

  • How awesome of your friend! Organizing things helps me with the stuff induced anxiety. Not sure of your space but maybe in the nursery/closet and tackle it a little bit at a time!

Like PP said... Start organizing. I find that plastic storage bins (of various sizes) are far better than boxes and bags as far as feeling organized.

Also, go through everything with a fine tooth comb (clothing, in particular). If you're not 100% sure it's something you want, get rid of it. I think sometimes we feel obligated to keep every gift, and end up overwhelmed by the clutter.

We have three bins... Use in the future (bigger clothing), save for the next one (too small, but save), and donate/consign. It helps keep the clutter under control.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • I wish I had this problem. I just started applying for a 4th temp job to afford everything. Good luck getting organized!
  • I feel like there is this consumer myth that you need a million things for a baby. I found out with my first that you DON'T. Babies have been surviving for many thousands of years without a lot of this stuff. A stroller, car seat, sling, bouncer and some clothes will get you through the first few months. It's so nice of your friend to pass all this stuff in, though!
  • I'm having anxiety just looking at what we need to purchase!
  • Oh my gosh I am so here! Baby stuff that has been brought over by friends is slowly taking over my living room...I have to find the time to organize it all but unfortunately I am in classes 5 days a week until December 18th and my weekends.are spent doing homework and spending tkme with DH and DS.
  • Just wanted to give you a heads up that car seat bases expire just like car seats do so be sure to check the date. Also, of they have been in an accident (the degree of accident depends on the brand) they may need to be replaced.
  • I can understand how you are feeling! I just found out LO is a boy, and I have 3 cousins who all had baby boys last year. And today they were talking about getting together their baby clothes/gear to give to me. Sweet gesture, but all I could imagine was piles and piles of stuff in my house! If that happens, I'll have to go through it and decide what to keep and what to donate. I'm already going to be having 2 showers, and I'm a very clutter free only keep what we need type person, so I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed with the massive amount of stuff that I'm sure will be coming! (Not that Im ungrateful, its all very generous, and I'm thankful for it all, but still I know I will be overwhelmed).
  • Don't use second hand breast pumps unless they are hospital grade and cleared for re-use. which these probably aren't. Call the manufacturer before you use them if you aren't sure. You may make your baby ill otherwise.
