2nd Trimester

Early gender reveal

I won a free gender reveal from a 3d ultra sound place. I am super excited and I am doing it at 14.5 weeks. Has anyone else had one done this early at a 3d place. If so was it corrct.

  • 14.5 weeks is WAY too early and you will likely be setting yourself up for disappointment if you really want to know the SEX.
  • I have 2 friends that are pregnant right now that found out the gender at 14 weeks, but they didn't announce it publicly til 18 weeks when it was re-confirmed. The 14 week gender was right, for both of them. But it'd really suck if it was wrong, and that is pretty early.
  • I found out between 11.5w-14w with all my boys... and it was obvious
  • I found out at 15 weeks with my boy and it was SUPER obvious lol. I think if it's a boy you'll know right away, but girls might be trickier to tell.
  • I went to a 3D appointment at exactly 14 weeks and found out I was having a girl. Later at my Dr appointment they confirmed it was in fact a girl. I didn't Rush out and buy stuff at 14 weeks because I wanted to make absolutely sure. It would be just my luck to be told its a girl and go crazy shopping then it's a boy lol. You will most likely recieve an accurate estimate to the sex of your baby. I made sure to ask the tech if they have ever been wrong...
  • Is there any way you could wait a few more weeks, to ensure that its more accurate? It's really difficult to tell the sex at 14 weeks. Like PPs said, with a boy its more obvious, but I would at least hold off on buying anything until your anatomy scan confirms the sex.
  • I found out at 13 weeks, but did not announce until it was confirmed at 20+ weeks. I would definitely go to the ultrasound, but I wouldn't run out to buy blue/pink until I had my 20 week scan.

    Have fun!

  • I would wait until at least 16 weeks.

Congratulations! That's a cool thing to win. I would wait until you're at 16 weeks just to be sure. I know it's possible to tell at 14, but another week and half will be beneficial. Also, don't expect your baby to look like much of a "baby." The amniotic fluid distorts the images and you'll end up with pictures of (in my case) a bear cub. The longer you wait for the 3D, the better the images of the face and more it looks like a baby human instead of something else.

  • We did a 3D scan at 16wks + some days but she was too small / squirmy at that point to get a clear shot of the goods. Went back at 18wks, and she had her cord tucked between her legs so that was a no go as well, finally at 19wks just a few days prior to my A/S they confirmed she is a girl. I wouldn't count on anything at 14wks, one way or another.. it's just a guess at that stage.

  • 3D ultrasounds typically don't look very interesting until you are further along. They rely more on the outer structures than the internal ones, so until the baby really starts to fill out and put on muscle and fat, the image won't be very "baby-like". I know the trend these days is to do these early for sex determination, and because you won it for free it's up to you, but usually these provide the best images in the late stages of the second trimester into the third trimester.

I lurk. I snark. I offer sound advice if you're not BSC. You may not like me. I'm okay with it.

  • How fun! Like others said, I definitely wouldn't announce until its confirmed at 16-20 weeks but that's totally exciting to maybe find out so early!
  • I did mine at 14 weeks 3d gender reveal...they could see it was a boy clearly...I've had 2 ultrasounds since at obgyn and they weren't wrong
  • When we booked our 3D ultrasound they advised waiting as long as possible because you get much better shots of the baby's face as keepsakes since he/se is more developed. If you only want to know the sex you could take your chances at 14.5 weeks but I would personally want the better images if you're going through the trouble of an extra ultrasound for non-medical purposes, and I'd also wait it out a little longer so you can be sure it's accurate. I wouldn't trust it at 14.5 weeks.
