At what week did you do a membrane sweep

So with my first pregnancy I did not do one, ended up going to 42 weeks. I'm planning a birth center this time and they won't take me if I come in at 42 weeks. At what week did you decide to do a sweep and when did you deliver? I'll be 39 weeks on Monday, thought about possibly doing it at 40 weeks.

I don't want to rush baby out. But with my first they strapped me to a bed and wouldn't let me move because "42 weeks is high risk." That was very traumatic to me, and absolutely broke my heart. I don't want that to happen again.

Any additional all natural induction tips would be great! I'm only 38 weeks, I still have plenty of time!

Re: At what week did you do a membrane sweep

  • I've had multiple membrane sweeps with all of my pregnancies (this is #5) and it's never worked to put me into labor. BUT, I know people it has worked for - usually within 12 hours.

  • Oh, and my doctor won't do it until 39 weeks because it is considered an induction technique.

If I am able (dilated enough), I'm going to ask for one today at my appointment, I'm 40+1. No idea if it will work (FTM). The reason being, my doc will not let anyone go past 42 weeks even. All they had to tell me was that the risk of "fetal death" dramatically spikes at 42 weeks and I was convinced. So if I don't go into labor this week, they will induce next week between 41 and 42. I'd like to avoid that if possible and go into labor naturally...
  • I had one yesterday at 38 weeks. *sigh* nothing but spotting. I did lose a big size of my MP this morning with a tinge of brown to it, sorry TMI?
  • I had one at 40 weeks and went into labor at 40+4
  • I've had one at 39 weeks, I'm also trying to avoid being induced. My midwives are concerned I will develop pre-eclampsia. So I'm trying everything to get this kid moving. Evening primrose oil, walking, squatting, sex, spicy food, acupuncture...nothing is working.
  • With my 1st I had one at 38+6 days and had my daughter 5 days later. I'm hoping my dr will do one at my next apt with this one. I'll be 38+4.
  • FTM-I had it done yesterday at 40+1 at 1pm, was up from 12-5am with Braxton hicks and nothing since. My Dr will send me for an ultrasound when I'm 41wks and talk about inducing. I really hope baby comes before then! So frustrating to finally feel a contraction and realize they're so irregular that it's just BH...
  • Ok, just had the membrane sweep about an hour ago. Not gonna lie, it sucked. Very uncomfortable, but lasted about 3 seconds. Let's see what happens!
  • Ladies I am in complete shock. At my appointment I asked if I should do a sweep or if they suggested other things... She said she could do a sweep whenever I was ready... But she also suggested the much debated... Wait for it!... CASTOR OIL. I don't personally plan on trying it, because their birth center said not to. I got real wide eyed when she mentioned it! I was like "umm anything else..." She then laughed and was like "Oils, pumping, SEX... Get up and start walking, I'll see you next week!"
  • I had a membrane sweep today at 39+4. It was really uncomfortable and I bled quite a bit, but it didn't last long. Hoping it helps! We'll see...

I'm in the same boat. I'll be 38 weeks tomorrow and my midwife did a sweep today. There is a high probability that I will need to be induced if I don't go into labor myself soon. Thankfully I was already dilated and effaced some so she could do the sweep. We'll see if it works. Definitely made me cramp and have some sporadic contractions today.
  • I had a stretch & sweep at 40wks 4days. It didn't hurt. Was told by the MW that the only reason they hurt is because your cervix isn't soft or softening. Was also told if it has worked successfully I will know in the nxt 48hrs. 2 days after am having the S&S I went into labour and had DD.

Oh really? That is good to know. My cervix was soft. It didn't really hurt, though it wasn't comfy (is it ever though, having someone up in your business?!). I would love to go into labor on my own.
  • I want mine done ASAP lol. Lets get this show on the road (as soon as its safe...of courseeeeeeee)

Dr said they'll do it at 39w0d...only thing is, I went to schedule my appointment (Monday the 26th I'd be 39w2d) and the only appt with a doctor that week is on FRIDAY! Such a bummer to wait till 39w6d. I'm going to keep calling and harassing them to see if there's an opening earlier in the week with a doctor. He didn't recommend an RN doing it...

He also said sex pretty much does the same thing (some chemical with a P?) soooo there is that lol!

They are uncomfortable but if done right they shouldn't hurt. Lol I agree there, it's never comfy having someone up in your business.
I know the feeling of wanting to go into labour on your own.
I was induced with DS1 & I had a horrible experience. I was pretrified when I fell pregnant with DS2 but because I was adamant I didn't want no intervention unless myself or DS2 were in danger they left me alone & I went into labour by myself 11 days after due date. All the S&S in the world didn't help with DS1 (& I had a few) I had one with DS2 again did nothing but with this pregnancy it seemed to have shifted things along. And 6 days after due date I had DD :)
  • @kim1228 they don't usually consider a S&S in the uk till your a week over your due date. I got mine early due to my anxiety.

They are prostaglandins. They are contained in semen. They are hormones that are basically fatty lipids and can cause smooth muscle contractions and muscle dilation thus inducing labor.

curious to know if it worked for you or not? I'm getting one done tomorrow morning and getting anxious
  • I had a membrane sweep last Wednesday at 2:00 pm. I was 39 weeks to the day. I had lots of pressure and cramping almost immediately and by 10:00 am Friday morning my water broke while I was in the hospital. Two hours later my son was born. It was affective and pretty quick!
  • I'm due Tuesday and I'm really really hoping my dr will do a sweep at my appt tomorrow.
  • My next appointment is Thursday, I will be 39 weeks 4 days. Sounds like it is worth a try!
  • I posted a few days ago, just an update. Had my sweep on thurs at 40+1 and nothing yet :(
Supposedly if they work, it's within 48 hours. Was 1cm dilated at the time. I have noticed more mucus loss, so maybe it did something...
  • I had it done at 38 w 1d. (My Dr had ressons) I was 4cm with a bulging bag of water. My water broke an hour after I left the office and contractions started 4 hours after that.
  • just had mine done at 39 weeks, she said I was 2cm and bolging and could feel his head, little bit crampy atm but hopefully something will happen!
