Group B Question

I was reading my medical summary online, and to be honest it is mostly gibberish to me. But from what I read, it looks like I'm positive for GBS. (Would've been nice to know sooner since I'm 39 weeks on Tues. There was a mix up and I had to be tested again and have not gotten results from doc as of yet.)

If I'm reading it right and did test positive, I know it is standard for antibiotics to be administered once I'm admitted, and that they want to get two doses in 4 hours apart. However, things are looking like they will be similar to DD's birth.

With DD they kept sending me home because I wasn't progressing. I never got admitted until my water broke while I was there. Three hours later DD was born and everyone was happy.

If I have GBS and it goes the same way, that won't be enough time for even one full dose of antibiotics. Anyone know anything about how risky it is not to have the antibiotics? Everything I keep finding on Google is just getting me forums with people bashing anyone who considers refusing the antibiotics. I just want to know how at risk we are if this labor goes too fast for the meds to work.

(Obviously I will be asking doc as soon as I can get through but until then I want to be as prepared as I can.)

Re: Group B Question

  • If you didn't get a full round of antibiotics, they would culture baby at 24 and 48 hours and as long as cultures are negative baby will be fine. If cultures are positive, they would put baby on antibiotics. It freaks me out too. I went in last night thinking I was in labor but no cervix change. I just want to make sure I get the antibiotics in time. So stressful!

  • My water broke at 35 weeks 4 days and I hadn't been tested yet. I was able to labor at home for 5 hours until contractions were 2-3 minutes apart. They got me on antibitotics at 8:30am and she was born at 12:09pm. We stayed 48 hours because she was early but they were also able to make sure there were no issues in case I was GBS positive. I still don't know if I was, but it's been over a month and baby girl is still perfect :)
  • I asked my OB this and he said it's less than 1% chance baby would be infected
  • You are usually admitted sooner. I found evidence that a water birth decreases the transmission to baby. If that's an option for you. Here is some evidence based info https://evidencebasedbirth.com/groupbstrep/

"If a mother who carries GBS is not treated with antibiotics during labor, the baby’s risk of becoming colonized with GBS is approximately 50% and the risk of developing a serious, life-threatening GBS infection is 1 to 2% "
  • I was GBS + and my labor start to finish was only 4 hrs, only 2 at the hospital. They barely got one dose in me before I delivered. Like pp said, chance of transmittal is around 1%, but because of the risks to baby, they kept us 48 hours to monitor her. I wouldn't worry!

I think if you get a full dose or 2 full doses, no matter what, they keep you for 48 hours after birth to keep an eye on the baby.
