Post partum belly soreness

I gave birth Wednesday, and of course had a little "5 month" sized pooch and wasn't concerned. Placenta came out and nurses were rubbing my belly in the hospital saying the uterus was firm and felt like it was doing what it should. Now though on day 4, my belly still protrudes just as much as it did day one which in and of itself is fine but the bottom of it is pretty firm and really tender to the touch. Sleeping on my side hurts as does switching sides and getting up because my belly is so heavy and painful. I texted my dr and she said to just let her know if I have a fever or bleeding gets bad (neither) but I can't help but think this isn't normal. Thoughts??

Re: Post partum belly soreness

  • I had a c-section, but this sounds very similar to my recovery. I didn't notice as much of the firmness but it sounds like it is probably just your uterus that you are feeling. It takes them a while to shrink back down and it's a good thing that it's firm rather than soft or boggy. The pooch may take a while to go away as well as there is still a lot of extra fluid and skin there. It took a few days before mine starting shrinking down but then I was noticing a difference daily. And I did have an issue with not being able to sleep on my side and I hated it. I felt the same heaviness but it was gone around a week later and now I am even sleeping on my stomach again, YAYYY! Maybe try propping a pillow under your side when you sleep, that helped me for a few days.

  • I was having similar pain while still in the hospital so they gave me a support belt that pretty much holds it all in. Has definitely helped my muscles as they go back to normal not have as much hanging out for them to support. Mine is just a big band that I Velcro as loose or tight as I want.
