Mom's with Trick or Treaters

Would you be weary if someone gave your child a baked good over candy?
Since I'll probably be home just handing candy out, I wanted to make these adorable little pumpkin rice crispy things instead.
However, if they are just going to get tossed because parents will think it's weird than I'll forgo them!
What would you think?

  • Agree, my mom and I were just talking about this, this morning.  We love to bake and she was asking if we should make some for the neighborhood.  I think we will for neighbors that I know well, but not for trick or treaters, I think they would be tossed.
I remember one of my neighbors made these awesome candy popcorn balls for Halloween when I was young.  She only made them once a year and it was such a treat.  I'm afraid it wouldn't fly today.
  • I agree with PP, I would only give home make goodies to families you know. Also I would suggest including a note or tag that says, "Happy Halloween from....." so people remember who gave them the treat (and that it is same to eat) at the end of the night

That's a great idea! Yeah, it's too bad that's how things are nowadays. I guess I do get it though.
I'll probably stick with the neighbors I know, though it's only a handful.
    I just love festive goodies!
  • I personally throw all home made things away without even looking at it. mainly because my mom never checked my candy, I had home baked pumpkin shaped cooikes and was sick for a week afterwards when I was 7, we have found so many things in home baked goods around here its unreal. I even break up the store bought candy into bits before letting DD have it.

That's so unfortunate, but a good safe move.
  • Anything homemade gets tossed no questions asked.
  • We toss anything homemade and even fruit. Even my mom tossed those when my brother and I were trick or treaters, and it wasn't as common for items to be tainted.
  • Same boat, not unless I know them or my son knows them because they're in the same class, even then I'm a bit weary.

Which is crazy because I LOVE bake sales!! And I don't know who madd those goodies but I buy and eat them....
  • I toss I hate to do it but when it comes to my kids I rather not risk it. It's very rare to get poisoned but I don't want to play around with there health. If it was a class treat you know where to find the parent. But most schools won't allow home baked goods anymore. Also there are a lot of kids with allergies. Some even if you just happen to have peanut butter at home it could contaminate and they could have a reaction. If your close with neighborhood kids I would do it for them. Or just bake them for your family.
  • Yeah if I don't know you then I'm throwing it away. I even throw out candy that looks crushed or too wrinkled. Sadly, you can never be too careful nowadays.

@Gapeach83 great point regarding the allergies!! So true!
  • I was also going to mention allergies or families with specific diet restrictions.  While I love it when my friends make things for us, I'm not sure how I would feel about a stranger handing us homemade treats.  Even though they're probably delicious, I like to be able to know a person and their kitchen enough to trust that they washed their hands!  :)
  • I also am in the boat that anything that looks funny, homemade, fruit etc gets tossed right away. I do live in a family friendly neighborhood and if I know the person giving the homemade treat, it would be allowed to be eaten. That is if I can remember who gave it. So that being said, I would add a gift tag.

Also lurk on Facebook because there have been trends every year saying what people are doing to candy.. My mom threw away any fruit and home baked goods and any candy in strange wrappers... If you have to second guess always throw out first... However back to OPs question.. PPs have given you great advice about only giving them to families that you know.. If you don't know the family just give them regular store bought candy.. Even though you have great intentions and they are really just treats for the kids.. There are people who have not been as honest and kids have gotten very sick... Which is unfortunate when there are people like you OP are genuinely trying to just make nice treats for kids..

As long as you don't give out mini-boxes of raisins... why neighbors...why!?

I would love raisins for my daughter
  • I toss anything homemade. Anything torn, squashed, or just a bit funky looking gets pitched too. If you want to make friends with my kiddo and I, Cow Tales are the way to go neighbours :D
If you want to avoid candy, go for little toys like squishy eyeballs or fake vampire teeth. There's a lady on our route who last year had a cauldron filled with squishy brains and frogs and a smoke machine, and thats all the kiddo has been talking about for weeks now (we live off the town common, on the route taken by the annual Horrible's Parade so we get loads of trick or treaters and the neighbourhood goes all-out). Plus its allergy friendly which is pretty important (check out the teal pumpkin project).

Oo I like these ideas!! That will be really fun to do!
  • Even when we trick or treated in Disneyland a week ago I tossed anything that looked open or had damaging to the wrapper. Sadly with the sickos out there you can't be to careful. Wish I had a group or something I could bake for though, your idea sounds cute!

DS loves raisins but I am not aware of the mini boxes being individually wrapped. The boxes can easily be opened and tampered with with I would probably toss them if he got any.

Some companies wrap the little boxes and some don't.. If it was in a sealed wrapper then I would be ok but if not then I would pitch it
  • There's actually never been an instance of someone poisoning Halloween candy. It's all urban legend.
There are 2 documented cases of people giving their OWN children poisoned candy to make them sick but not giving it to anyone else. They first lied and said their kids got it trick or treating but later confessed.

Probably an UO - but I feel like while it is a scary world I don't think we need to fuel the panic by over checking everything. I hate seeing police departments and hospitals scanning candy for razor blades on Halloween because 1- there has never been a razor blade found in Halloween candy and 2- can't we just let kids have some fun without making them paranoid of everything?!

Sure I look over my daughter's stuff before she eats it just to make sure it's not open and mostly to make sure it's candy I don't mind her having. But I don't go crazy and I don't let her know because I want her to have fun.

When to comes to baked goods, if it was from a neighbor we knew- and we know most of them- I would be ok. Otherwise I would toss it.
  • Baked goods from strangers would be a no go at my house, but I agree with @Pontot31 No need to go overboard checking the candy.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I love the idea, but I don't think it's good for the random kids coming to your door. I would throw it away if my kid got it

I like the point you made about not letting them know you're checking.
  • Save the baking for daycare/preschool/other parties. Not for trick or treat.....it will be a waste of time and unappreciated.
  • An alternative thought.  You could host a little block party beforehand for the neighborhood.  Then you could do some baked goods and things like blood punch (red koolaid) or ghoul goo (vanilla pudding dyed green)

  • Here's a somewhat related question - I was thinking of baking Halloween-themed brownies or cupcakes for the staff of my midwives' office as a thank you. Now, as I read this thread, I'm wondering if those things would just get thrown away and if it would be better to bring in wrapped candy. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

I would think they would still eat them.

They would probably be eaten.  You're known to them so it's different than just someone off the street.

That's a lovely idea, except my ability to socialize in person for more than a few minutes is rapidly diminishing. ;)

They would be eaten. They have your name, address, phone number etc. So they can track you lol. So knowing all that they are sure you wouldn't poison them. Hell they even have your blood type.
