2nd Trimester

anyone suffered antenatal depression

I'm going through depression spells. I can't talk to my partner about it becausw he doesn't understand or care enough, frankly.
I went to my midwife, she said speak to my gp. I went to my gp, she did nothing except give me a website to go on when I don't want to go on a flipping website to see what's wrong with me.
I'm having a lot of problems in my pregnancy, it's not an enjoyable one anyway. I'm always stressed, I'm never happy, the only people who support me is my parents and family.
What can I do next to solve this because it's becoming a major issue now. It's getting so much worse, thanks

  • Sorry that your going through this and that your gp was no help. I'd recommend seeing a therapist or preferably a psychiatrist. They can provide a safe place to vent and help determine whether or not you need anti-depressants. No, it's not true that you can't take anything while you're pregnant. There are plenty of women that are pregnant and anti-depressants. Proper help can help you identify how severe your depression is and if medication is necessary, they can work with your ob to find something that works for you.

  • I was sucidal during my first trimester-I ended up getting seen by a therapist very quickly because my OB and the ER doctors reconized how serious depression can be. I'm lucky in a sense that I had mental health issues before so DH and my family saw the signs and are incredibly supportive.

For me, your midwives response would make me rethink having her as a medical advisor. Antenatal depression is serious but it is treatable. Try talking to your GP again. The local children's hospital where I live has a mental health unit for mothers-perhaps a hospital near you may have some access to resources to help you right now.

I've been on Zoloft since before I became pregnant and never stopped but what helped me the most was having a therapist and my incredibly supportive OB who increased my visits and fought for my mental health. You deserve those types of medical practioners and they can also help explain what you are going through to your loved ones if you need help.
