Slow rising HCG, but saw heartbeat

I just wanted to share what has happened so far...which has been a bit odd. I've been spotting since 5 1/2 weeks. I didn't want to go to the OB and get an ultrasound, because I was afraid it was too early to see a baby, and I didn't want the drama of seeing a sac with no baby. So I got some betas at my family doctors. The first was a bit under 15,000 (at 6 weeks 2 days) and then 48 hours later, the next beta was only 17,000 something. My doubling rate was almost 8 days... WAY over what seems like a viable pregnancy. So I did go to the OB today at 6 weeks, 6 days to get an ultrasound. There was a baby, measuring 2 days behind with a heart rate of only 122. The OB office was very happy to see it was not ectopic, as they suspected. I was stunned to see a baby, but was warned that this pregnancy is threatened.

I did some google searching *gasp* and only found stories of slow rising betas that ended in miscarriage.

So I'm not sure what to feel or think. I don't want to count on a baby that might not arrive. I know this is not what everyone would think is right, but I'm trying to remain detached until the 12 week ultrasound when baby hopefully has a strong heart rate.

I did decide to tell a few friends and my mom so that I'd have some people to talk to if this pregnancy doesn't work out.

Thanks for reading!

  • Okay, I have no experience with this but I just wanted to offer my T&P...this sounds so hard. It's the worst not to know what's going on. I really really hope you get a viable pregnancy and a healthy pregnancy.

  • Did they check your progesterone to see if it's low? My hcg wasn't doubleing correctly with my last pregnancy. It unfortunelty ended in a mc but that was due to MTHFR. We seen a heart beat of 144 at 7 weeks 2 days and the dr said she would no longer go by my numbers since we seen the heart beat. Plus your numbers are so high they won't double every 48-72 hours. Thoughts and prayers!
  • I don't think a HR of 122 is concerning is it? I realize your numbers didn't double but they're already so high? They seem high to me but I honestly am not sure.

I'm sorry you're going through this. My thoughts are with you and hoping for the best.

  • Thanks, more brownish stuff when wiping today. All I did walk a bit in a store and I felt crampy and then spotted. This has been happening since 5 1/2 weeks. And no cause of spotting was seen on the ultrasound. Maybe it is low progesterone. It wasn't tested this preg since it was a natural BFP. But on other pregnancies that it was tested, it was appropriately high.

I'm just going to try my best to not think about this all the time.
  • Prayers for you!! I'm also having to go through a period of waiting to see if I'm suffering from a gestational sac with no embryo or not. Thank you for sharing your story. It's brought me some comfort to know I'm not the only one.
  • I could be wrong, but I think it only truly doubles much earlier on-- like from implantation up to week 5ish. I think the higher the number gets, it takes much longer to truly double. Ur measurement of 2 days behind and the fact u saw the heartbeat are both really really good signs.

If it makes you feel better I had a similar heart beat with my son. Didn't follow betas/hcg levels and spotted every month. He's a happy (yet insane) 18 month old currently smashing me with a tonka truck yelling "beep beep"
  • Also he measured a week behind in the beginning and was 8.4 on his due date. Remember it's all just a best guess, normal is completely different for every baby
  • I'm not sure why you said a heart rate of "only 122". Did your doctor say you should be concerned about that? The heart rate was 120 at my 7 week appointment and my doctor said everything was good. I had to go back for another ultrasound eight days later and the heart rate had increased to 168. I know it's hard, but try to remain calm.
