soccer and early pregnancy

I ve been playing soccer weekly and just found out I'm 5weeks pregnant. Has anyone's doctor made recommendations and playing sports during early pregnancy?

I played until I was 11 weeks with my first. Then I met with my OB. She was honestly upset with me when she found out and told me to be done.

Looking back - she was right. There is a lot you cannot control, and no need to increase the risk of getting hit in the stomach or falling hard on your stomach.

  • I have yet to ask my doctor, but I am in the same position. I have 3 games left. I'd be cool telling the team that I'm out now BUT my BIL is on the team with me, so if my dr even tells me no idk what to say. I think this early and how long you have been playing can make it okay, but thats my own personal opinion.

  • I played softball my whole 1st trimester with my first. My dr wasn't thrilled with the idea, but ultimately gave me the ok as long as I promised to take it easy and not slide into any bases. I think it's one of those grey areas where you need to consult with your doctor and do what you feel comfortable with. Lots of people run, work out, and play sports during pregnancy. If you do decide to continue, just make sure to be extra safe and take it easier than you normally would.
  • I played soccer for a longtime & knowing the sport, it doesn't sound like a very good idea. It has nothing to do with how long you have been playing, it's more the contact side of it that seems kind of risky. But I don't know your league & how aggressive it is. I played on a coed league a few years ago and some of the teams we played against were nasty.
  • Talk to your doctor at your next visit. My said my fitness activities could stay similar or the same if I was comfortable. I played volleyball and softball until I was 32 weeks with my first. Soccer where it can have more contact might be different.
  • I have been figure skating since I was 8. The last year has been a lot less, as I was planning my wedding and dealing with life in general, but my Dr. told me yesterday that as long as I don't over do it, I use extreme caution and I take a break when I start to feel tired, I'm good. She told me that women who are in pretty decent shape tend to deal with the 3rd trimester a bit easier, so I'll continue to hit the gym and make my morning ice time until I'm told its too dangerous. I also teach Learn To Skate, but those are my little ones that are pretty much just learning how to march, glide and do very basic skills :)

I have quite a few skating friends who also continued to skate (one of which was training double jumps AND pairs skating up until 8 months... crazy) until about 5 months, when a growing belly started to throw them off balance. I would also recommend asking your doctor, and if he/she clears you, play if you're comfortable with it :)
